1 NOT IN OUR COMMUNITY

2 Elizabeth Eckford Sept. 4, 1957: At the age of 15 Elizabeth tried to enter Little Rock Central High School, a racially segregated school, she was met by an angry mob of protesters and members of the Arkansas National guard who blocked her from entering school. She was taunted, teased, harassed, and threatened with death- simply for trying to go to school. Finally, two people from the crowd stepped forward and helped her get home safely.

3 Discussion Questions:
Why were people so upset that Elizabeth was trying to go to school? How do you think she was treated after she was eventually allowed to attend school? Do you think she felt safe at school?

4 What about T.H. Bell Junior High?
Although we do not have to deal with the issue of segregation in our school, we have incidents where people are bullied, harassed, taunted, teased, threatened, and made to feel unsafe. Why do some people think that it is OK to bully or harass others? What role do you think the current atmosphere in our country has to do with people being treated disrespectfully? What role does Social Media play in bullying and harassment?

5 Not in Weber District Dr. Jeff Stephens, superintendent of Weber School District has challenged every teacher, counselor, administrator, custodian, support staff, and student to make our schools a safe community of everyone. You can do that by: Treating everyone with respect. Stand up to bullies by telling them that bullying is not part of our school community. Help those who you see or know are being bullied by being an ally. Report any bullying to an adult immediately. Together we can make sure everyone feels safe and valued in our school community.
