3 Something to think about…  30% of 7 th and 8 th graders may feel unsafe because of bullying, and harassment  29% of 7 th and 8th graders may have been made fun due to the way they look or talk  36% of 7 th graders may have had mean rumors or lies spread about them California Department of Education- 2007

4 Why do kids bully (hurt) each other? Because I see others doing it. Because it's what you do if you want to hang out with the right crowd. Because it makes me feel, stronger, smarter, or better than the person I'm bullying. Because it's one of the best ways to keep others from bullying me.

5 Bullying What are examples? Where does it happen? When does it happen? Who does it happen between?

6 How Can it Affect People? It may cause people to feel unsafe. It might cause sadness and loneliness. It could cause people to react with violence.

7 What are the negative roles we take on? 1. Bullies do their bullying in the shadows. 2. The student being bullied might be scared to tell anyone (or may have tried to no avail). 3. Others who see the bullying don’t know what to do. They are the bystanders. The good news? Bystanders aren’t unkind. They are unsure.

9 A note about cyberbullying… Cyber bullying includes, but is not limited to, the following misuses of technology: harassing, teasing, intimidating, threatening, or terrorizing another student or staff member by way of any technological tool, such as sending or posting an inappropriate or derogatory email message, telephone message, instant message, text message, digital picture or image, or website posting (including an individual or collective blog).

10 I.U.S.D. School Board says… All forms of bullying and cyber bullying by school district students are hereby prohibited. Anyone who engages in bullying and cyber bullying in violation of this policy shall be subject to appropriate discipline. Students who have been bullied or cyber bullied shall promptly report such incidents to any staff member. Complaints of bullying and cyber bullying shall be investigated promptly, and corrective action shall be taken when a complaint is verified. Neither reprisals nor retaliation shall occur as a result of the submission of a complaint. The District shall annually inform students that bullying and cyber bullying of students will not be tolerated.

13 What do I do? If I experience cyberbullying Block communication with the cyberbully. Delete messages without reading them. Talk to a friend or adult about the bullying. Report the problem to an adult at school, police or internet service provider. To be cyber safe Never post or share your personal information online (this includes your full name, address, telephone number, school name, parents’ names, credit card number, or Social Security number) or your friends’ personal information. Never share your Internet passwords with anyone, except your parents. Never meet anyone face-to-face whom you only know online. Talk to your parents about what you do online.
