1 Language Standards Language 7.1 Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking. a. Explain the function of phrases and clauses in general and their function in specific sentences. b. Choose among simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex sentences to signal differing relationships among ideas. c. Place phrases and clauses within a sentence, recognizing and correcting misplaced and dangling modifiers.*

Then determine which one describes another clause, which one answers an adverb question (how, when, where, why, to what extent). (Three of the lowest scores overall in my class were these first three questions. Personally, I don’t feel like these three questions are particularly important in real life writing, and I don’t feel like they’re very likely TNReady questions. Still, they’re right in line with what we’ve done in DGP and worth touching on briefly if you think your students can benefit.)
