Developing Volunteers for Urban Ministry

Parable of the Talents “His master replied, ‘Well done good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share in your master’s happiness!’” Matthew 25:21

It Starts With What You’ve Got…

You have a volunteer coming for the first time for City Life Club
You have a volunteer coming for the first time for City Life Club. When they arrive, you tell them that the best thing they can do is interact with the kids and to feel free to ask you any questions. You quickly have to run off to take attendance and set up the snacks and the games. Throughout the night you check in on your volunteer and ask “How’s it going?” They say things are going fine, but you notice through the night (and are slightly annoyed) that they stand against the wall and don’t interact with kids. You determine that they must not be a natural with kids the way that you are. After you do the talk, you ask them to be a part of your small group. You notice that they don’t speak up much there either. After club is over, you have kids to drive home, so you make sure to thank them for coming and express your deep gratitude for their service and tell them you will see them next week. You are secretly hoping they are more outgoing next week. What is going wrong with this scenario? What is going well in this scenario? How do you think the volunteer felt about his first experience at club? What are some simple changes that could be made to improve this volunteer’s experience? (Think of suggestions for before, during and after club)
