Warm-Up Fill in the tables below for each INPUT-OUTPUT rule. 3)
Using your graphing calculator list the first 4 values for each recursive sequence. Then write the recursive rule. -2 enter 2) 1 enter ANS + 7, enter ANS *3, enter Fill in the tables below for each INPUT-OUTPUT rule. 3) 1, 3, 9, 27 -2, 5, 12, 19 Start = 1 Now *3 = Next Start = -2 Now + 7 = Next 4 6 8 10 12

HOMEWORK QUESTIONS??

functions

Functions

Investigation

Investigation Function: a relation where each input (x) has exactly one output (y) Domain: the independent variable. Also known as the input or x - value. Range: the dependent variable. Also known as the output or y - value.

Example 1: State the domain and range for each table
Example 1: State the domain and range for each table. Then tell whether each table represents a function. Explain why or why not. x y 1 3 2 6 9 4 12 5 15

Example 2 State the domain and range for each mapping. Then tell whether each mapping diagram represents a function. Explain why or why not.

Example 3 State the domain and range for each set of ordered pairs. Then tell whether each set represents a function. Explain why or why not.

Example 4 List the ordered pairs for the points of each graph. Is each graph a function? a. b.

Vertical Line Test Some graphs contain too many points to list. To decide if a graph is a function, use the vertical line test. If a vertical line touches more than one point on the graph, it is not a function.

Example 5 Use the vertical line test to determine which relationships are functions. y x

YOUR Task!! With your group, create one mapping, table, and an ordered pair set that is a function Then, create one mapping, table, and ordered pair set that is not a function. Explain the difference between the two in 2-3 complete sentences.
