1 Functions Section 5.1

2 Functions A special relation. A relation in which each element of the domain is paired with exactly 1 element of the range (For every x there is only one y)

3 Domain: The possible x values – also known as the input variables. Range: The possible y values – also known as the output variables.

4 Is it a function? Give the Domain & Range.
X Y 3 8 4 7 5 9 6 10

5 Is it a function? Give the domain and range.
X Y 3 2 4 -1 6 5

6 Is it a function? Give the domain & range.

7 Is it a function? Give the domain & range.
{(4, 3), (7, 1), (12, 3), (8, 9)} {(3, 1), (7, 2), (4, 9), (3, 7)}

8 Is it a function? Give the domain & range.

11 Vertical Line Test It’s a function if the vertical line intersects the graph no more than once.

12 Is it a function? Give the domain & range.

17 Discrete Graph whose points are not connected

18 Continuous Graph whose points are connected

19 Function Notation: f(x)
Read “f of x” or “f in terms of x” f(x) is the output (range) variable and x is the input (domain) variable.
