3 Resource Exploitation
Residential Schools In 1951 the federal government amended the Indian Act to allow the provinces to administer the schools. Since the Church ran the education system in Quebec, residential schools opened up in the 1950’s and 1960’s. Read Document 23, p. 220 Resource Exploitation First Nations will have their hunting and fishing grounds disrupted in Nouveau Quebec and Cote Nord as Iron ore and other valuable minerals are discovered. Eventually whole communities will be moved and displaced as the Quebec government constructed huge hydroelectric dams in the 1970’s under Hydro Quebec. Mining, new infrastructure and arrival of workers will disrupt FN societies from the 1950’s to 1980’s. Voting In order for First Nations to vote , they had to renounce their status. Few did. As of 1960 FN could vote without any restrictions.
