1 Lesson Starter What is the heat? What is temperature?
What is heat measured in? What are the 3 units of measurement used when discussing heat?

2 Homework Find out the names of 3 scientists who have a unit of measurement named after them..

3 Gabriel Daniel Fahrenheit William Thomson aka Lord Kelvin
Homework Find out the names of 3 scientists who have a unit of measurement named after them.. Anders Celcius Gabriel Daniel Fahrenheit William Thomson aka Lord Kelvin

4 Lesson 3- learning intention
To identify how heat travels between hot and cold objects

5 Corners Does a hot object in the middle of the room heat the room or cool the object?

6 If we place a block of ice in a desert heat will flow in to it

7 If we place a fire in a cold forest it will heat up the surroundings

8 Heat Flows (copy) Heat always flows from where it is hotter to where it is cooler If you place a cold object in a hot environment heat will flow in to it If you place a hot object in a cold environment heat will flow from it

9 Experiment Heat a paper clip up using the bunsen burner then drop it into a test tube of water. Measure the temperature of the water before and after the paper clip is added

10 Hypothesis What do you think will happen? Why?

11 Copy table Temperature at start (⁰C) Temperature at end (⁰C) Change in Temperature (⁰C) Why is it important that we measure the temperature BEFORE we add the paperclip?

12 Experiment: Instructions
Collect Safety glasses, test tube, test tube rack, Bunsen burner, heat proof mat, tongs, paperclip, thermometer. Measure 10ml of water and pour into your test tube. Measure the temperature of the water with the thermometer and record into your table. Safely light the Bunsen burner. Holding the paperclip with the tongs, heat it until it glows red hot. Carefully drop the paperclip into the beaker of water. Record the new temperature of water and calculate the difference.

13 What do the results tell you?
Think.. What do the results tell you?

14 Heat flows (copy) When two objects with different temperatures are brought into contact, their temperatures will change until they reach the SAME TEMPERATURE

15 Watch.. Experiment on larger scale What will happen and why?
