Lesson 5: Temperature and Density

Heat A form of energy that can move from a hot place to a cooler place

Temperature The measurement of how hot an object is. Temperature is measured using a temperature scale. (Celsius, Fahrenheit, Kelvin)

Thermal Expansion An increase in the volume of matter which occurs when matter is heated.

Contraction: A decrease in the volume of matter with a decrease in temperature.

Notes For after demonstration

Most matter increases in volume when it gets hotter. Since volume changes and mass does not, the density of matter decreases.

Most matter decreases in volume when it gets cooler. Since volume decreases and mass stays the same, the density increases.

Volume ↑ Density ↓ Volume ↓ Density ↑

The density of air decreases as it gets hotter. As air heats it increases its volume or expands. When air cools it decreases in volume.

Water expands when it is cooled (4°C -0°C) unlike most substances.

Celsius: A temperature scale with the melting point of ice at 0 degrees and the boiling point of water at 100 degrees.

Fahrenheit: A temperature scale with the melting point of ice at 32 degrees and the boiling point of water at 212 degrees

Calculations: Changing from ° F → °C ° F - 32 ° / 1.8 Changing from °C → °F ° C x 1.8 + 32 °
