Chapter 6 Lesson 3 Describe the events that lead up to the Revolution.

2 Britain passes the Intolerable Acts/Coercive Acts
Series of laws designed to punish the colonists until the tea was paid for. What they did… Closed the port of Boston harbor Banned the committees of correspondence For the first time all the colonies would come together to help the people of Boston

3 First Continental Congress
All the colonies except Georgia met in Philadelphia, PA Voted to ban all trade with England until the Intolerable Acts were repealed. Started to train troops

4 Midnight Ride There were spies working on both sides.
General Gage found out John Hancock and Samuel Adams were in Lexington and colonist were storing arms in Concord. Paul Revere and William Dawes were sent to warn and gather troops.

Agreed to form the Continental Army Led by… George Washington He was a general during the French and Indian War Extremely good leader. Authorized the printing of paper money This is the first act as a government

8 The Battle of Bunker Hill
The militiamen had taken fortification of Bunker Hill and Breeds Hill 2,200 British soldiers attacked Col. William Prescott, “Don’t fire until you see the whites of their eyes!” British would win the battle but suffered heavy casualties. The inexperienced colonial militia had held its own against the world’s most powerful army!

British ships would blockade the American Coast Hessians (Germans) were paid soldiers to increase the British forces

12 Declaration of Independence
Written by Thomas Jefferson. Declared the colonist intent to separate from England.
