1 Do Now What elements do you think are important for us to consume? Why?

2 Objectives Identify the macromolecules needed to sustain life, and explain the importance of each one. Investigate and identify the type of macromolecules in various food items using indicators

3 Elements? Element: A pure substance that cant be broken down into simpler substances by any physical or chemical means. 1 Atom. Atom: Smallest particle of matter that still has chemical properties. Out of all the elements listed, which 3 do you feel are the most important? Why?

4 I Need My Macromolecules!
Macromolecules: Large molecules (polymers) formed from smaller ones (monomers) 3 main elements found in ALL macromolecules Carbon Hydrogen Oxygen What type of macromolecules are important to you?

5 Macromolecules Protein Carbs Lipids Nucleic Acids
Structures (hair, muscle, etc), Enzymes, Transport, etc. Monomer: Amino Acids Carbs Provides Energy Monomer: Monosaccharides Lipids Energy storage, insulation, cell membrane structure Monomer: Glycerol and Fatty acids Nucleic Acids Stores and transmit genetic information Monomer: Nucleotides

6 Carbohydrates Have a 1:2:1 Ratio
Simple Carbs: Sugars made of 1-2 molecules. Quickest energy (rapidly digested) Monosaccharides: 1 Sugar Glucose and Fructose Disaccharides: 2 sugars Lactose and Sucrose Complex Carbs: Sugar molecules strung together Broken down more slowly Polysaccharide: 3 or more sugars Glycogen and Starch Glucose Sucrose Glycogen

7 Testing for Organic Substances
Indicators: Helps identify a particular macromolecule Biuret Tests for Proteins Changes from blue to violet Benedicts Test for monosaccharides Changes from blue to green, yellow, orange, or red Iodine Test for polysaccharides Changes from a rust to deep blue-blackish

8 Do Now-Pd. 4 Place phones into show organizer.
Then take out your labs, and begin reading part C to understand what to do before we begin. Recall: Which indicator needed heat to react?

9 Do Now- Pd. 7 What is the difference between a negative control vs. positive control? What three indicators will you be using in lab, what do they test for, and how will you know if that substance they test for is present in the solution?
