In April of 1992, the government of the Yugoslav republic of Bosnia-Herzegovina declared its independence from Yugoslavia. Over the next couple of years, Bosnian Serb forces and the Yugoslav army, targeted Bosnian Muslims and Croatian civilians. This “cleansing” was promoted when Yugoslav leader Josip Broz Tito died in After his death, the different Yugoslav republics threatened to split their union apart. After Bosnia declared independence in 1992, the region quickly started to become the central of war. The three groups fighting in the country were Bosnian Muslims, Serbians, and Croatians.

Yugoslavia was divided into different regions based on ethnic and cultural reasons. Before the Bosnian genocide happened, there were already wars going on in Yugoslavia. These wars lasted 10 years, from 1991 to The death of the old leader of Yugoslavia made the different regions want change and separation from each other. The Bosnian war resulted in an estimated deaths. The height of the killings was in July 1995 when around 8000 Bosniaks(Bosnian Muslims) were killed in what became known as the Srebrenica genocide.

The Leader of Serbia, Slobodan Milosevic, helped to promote the cleansing of Bosniaks and Croatians in Bosnia. He was arrested on March 31st, 2001 by the Yugoslav authorities on suspicion of corruption, abuse of power, and embezzlement. There was lack of evidence, so the Serbian prime minister, Zoran Dindic, made him go to the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) for war crimes instead. The 5-year long trial ended without a verdict because he died in his prison cell on March 11th 2006.

In 2001, Serbian General Radislav Krstic, who played a major role in the Srebrenica massacre, was convicted of genocide and sentenced to 46 years in prison.

Ratko Mladic was a general in the Yugoslav People’s Army, and the Chief of Staff of the Army of Republika Srpska. He was charged with crimes against humanity, particularly in connection with the Srebrenica massacre and Siege of Sarajevo. The trial began on June 3rd, 2011, and he was convicted of 10 of the 11 charges and sentenced to life in prison on November 22nd, 2017.

In May 1993, the U.N. Security Council made the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) at The Hague, Netherlands. It was the first international tribunal since the Nuremberg Trials in and the first to prosecute genocide, among other war crimes.
