THE AWARD The Young Women in Public Affairs Award was created to
recognize young women for their— Commitment to volunteerism; Volunteer leadership achievements; and Dedication to the advancement of the status of women. Since inception in 1990, Zonta International has given 888 awards to 756 young women representing 56 countries. These young women will be tomorrow’s policy-makers and world leaders.

WHAT HAVE THEY BEEN DOING & WHERE ARE THEY NOW?
Our Club is currently endeavouring to locate all of our awardees and some of the previous finalists so that we can establish an alumni. However, many of these young women have married, moved residence or are living overseas so this task is proving somewhat difficult. Award Coordinator, Jean Wyder, has been able to locate a number through social media platforms about which the Club is delighted. Following are a few recent contacts.

GILLIAN WONG - 1992 AND OUR CLUB’S FIRST AWARDEE
Living and working in Melbourne - Manager Legal & Deputy Company Secretary at St Barbara Limited. Mother of a very active 18-month old daughter.

TAMMY SOLONEC - 1993 AWARDEE
Director, Nyikina Yorga Consultancies. 2017 Inducted into the WA Women’s Hall of Fame. 2012 WA Young Female Lawyer and Young Lawyer of the Year. Tammy, a Nigena woman from Derby, has been involved in advocating for indigenous peoples on local, state, national and international levels including at the United Nations. Mother of two young adults.

SASHA FAZIO (nee Moss) – 1995 AWARDEE
As a lawyer Sasha specialises in native title law, competition law and litigation. Undertook work experience with Kott Gunning. As well, she has a Masters in Psychotherapy facilitating women’s circles and meditation. Mother of a young daughter.

DEMELZA NEEDHAM (nee Ireland) - 1996 AWARDEE
Dr Ireland is a research fellow, lecturer and an Honours Coordinator. Between 2007 and 2015 Demelza was an immunology researcher in the fields of tumour biology and pregnancy at UWA . She has since developed units and lectures in women’s health at King Edward Memorial Hospital. Mother of 9 and 11 year old daughters.

KATE LAYMAN AWARDEE Living and working in Seattle as Corporate Counsel, Global Programs for Amazon. Kate has worked for various companies in Perth, Hong Kong, London and now Seattle.

CAITLYN RICE – 2006 AWARDEE Double degree in Law and Arts majoring in Political Science in Arts degree at UWA. Graduated in 2012 with 1st Class Honours. Works for the State Solicitor’s Office. At the SSO her work involves a wide range of civil litigation and advice matters.

GEORGINA FRASER – 2007 AWARDEE
Currently working for Wesfarmers as their LNG Business Development Manager. Prior to this she spent four years with Shell including time in Holland. As a business analyst Georgina has a strong foundation in economic modelling, identifying and developing new business opportunities and stakeholder management.

DITZA TENG – 2008 AWARDEE & DISTRICT 23 AWARDEE IN 2009
Resident Medical Officer (Junior Doctor) at Joondalup Health Campus. President of this group. GP training in 2017 leading to community placements in 2020. Married to Josh, also a doctor, who is specialising in intensive care and emergency medicine.

RACHEL HUNTER – 2009 AWARDEE
Rachel is a doctor at RPH after completing her degree at Notre Dame University. She is aiming to become a spinal surgeon. Spent 3 months volunteering in Tanzania, has a keen interest in netball and believes sport brings families together and makes for a happier community.

AMBER NEWTON – 2011 AWARDEE Amber’s university studies focussed around political and international relations combined with journalism. She now works as a Media Officer for a member of parliament and spends at least five months of the year in Canberra.

EMILIE FITZGERALD – 2012 AWARDEE
Emilie graduated in July 2018 with a Bachelor of Commerce majoring in Economics and Finance followed recently with a Masters in Professional Accounting. She is employed by the Reserve Bank of Australia in Sydney in their Payment Settlements Division as a Policy Analyst.

KARRI COLES– 2013 AWARDEE Karri graduated in 2017 with a double degree – Bachelor of Arts (Political Science) and Bachelor of Laws (Hons), undertaken at Bond University in Queensland. Karri is now working with global commercial firm Norton Rose Fulbright and has just joined our Zonta Club, the first YWPA Awardee to do so!

MEGAN RAPEPORT – 2014 AWARDEE
Moved to Melbourne to undertake a law degree but postponed this to pursue a double degree in the Arts. After her Award went to Israel on a 10 month educational and leadership program with her youth movement Habonim Dror. Board member of a volunteer group sharing objectives and values.

PAIGE MAY – 2016 AWARDEE In her second year of a Bachelor of Commerce double majoring in Accounting and Business Law at Curtin University. Is on the Vice-Chancellor’s list of top 1% of under-graduate students. Won the 2017 award for best student studying the Bachelor of Commerce Accounting and Business Law. Heading shortly to the University of Leeds, UK on exchange.

MADDY BARRETT – 2017 AWARDEE
Maddy has been undertaking work experience at Kott Gunning Lawyers. We will be hearing more from Maddy later in this evening’s Program.

WHO WILL BE OUR 2018 AWARDEE ?

Since our charter in June 1981, the Zonta Club of Perth Northern Suburbs has raised more than $250,000 for a range of programs and projects to support women and girls within the community. The Young Women in Public Affairs Award is one of those programs with seeing our Club’s 27th recipient of this Award.
