1 Fresno County Rural Transit Agency Moses Stites General Manager
Best Practices For ZEB Infrastructure & Building Design: Facility Preparation & Operation of a Zero Emission Bus Fleet April 4th, 2018 Fresno County Rural Transit Agency Moses Stites General Manager

2 FCRTA Service Area Serving 13 incorporated and 29 unincorporated communities in Fresno County

3 FCRTA FY 995,829 total miles FCRTA drives great distances to service Fresno County’s rural communities (Fresno to Coalinga is approximately 62 miles one way) Also (2) inter-county routes with City of Dinuba and KART 391,861 total passengers Ridership is declining overall (Statewide & Nationally) FCRTA plans to work on a study to create alternative rural transit services using electric vehicles to increase ridership and accommodate transit needs of the rural disadvantaged communities

4 FCRTA Solar EV Charging Stations
Last year FCRTA placed EV ARCs at all 13 rural incorporated cities throughout Fresno County EV ARC fits inside a parking space, requires no trenching or permits, and can be deployed in hours as well as moved to another location if needed  Equipped with battery storage to provide Level 2 EV charging day or night – up to 225 miles of EV driving generated per day Can be used for emergency power during a grid failure.

5 FCRTA Solar EV Charging Stations

6 FCRTA Current Fleet Vehicle fleet of ninety-two (92) vehicles
Forty-four (44) are powered by CNG Four (4) are powered by electric batteries FCRTA does not operate any diesel powered vehicles Goal of 2025 to have 100% alternative fuel fleet

7 New Maintenance Facility
Outgrown current facility, & building a new facility along the 99 in Selma, Kingsburg, or Selma New site will include: EV charging & CNG fueling station Economic development for location agency Vocational training: college, high school Space to accommodate new Electric Vehicles for FCRTA fleet

8 Adding to FCRTA (2) 35ft BYD Electric Buses
(5) 40ft Proterra Electric Buses (2) Electric Zenith Vans (2) Envision Solar Tree Chargers Applying for (6-8) ZEV Sedans As well as (25-50) ZEV Sedans in the near future

9 Vehicle Technology - Proterra Catalyst XR buses - Zenith Vans range per charge - Range of miles - Will be used for intra-city routes - Used for Rural Transit and Fowler Intra-city Transit

10 Vehicle & Infrastructure Technology
- BYD Model K9S, 35 foot electric bus - 145 miles range per charge - Will be used for Coalinga and Orange Cove inter-city express routes - Envision Solar “Solar Tree DCFC” - 250 kWh energy storage in pedestal Will provide charging for BYD buses

11 Operating A Zero Emission Bus
An FCRTA transit route is specifically selected to be used with a ZEV (due to the high mileage of rural transit routes) Drivers are required to take an EV course before operating vehicles- FCRTA developed a how to guide to drive an EV Infrastructure must be in place to allow charging in other cities where the vehicles are stored

12 New Vehicle & Infrastructure Benefits
Electric buses and vehicles will provide transit services to the public in rural communities without adding vehicle emissions Solar chargers use clean energy to charge electric vehicles Installation of chargers will promote and expand the use of electric vehicles in rural communities in collaboration with Caltrans, SJVAPCD, CARB, FCOG, CALSTART & the CEC
