2 WW1 Vocabulary Militarism – fascination with the glory of war and building up a nation’s military Alliances – agreements among competing groups of nations to help each other if war broke out Balkan Peninsula – region in southeastern Europe with many competing nationalist groups. Mobilization – the assembly and movement of troops Triple Entente – an alliance between Britain, France, and Russia Central Powers – an alliance during WW1 consisting of Germany, Austria-Hungary, the Ottoman Empire, and Bulgaria.

3 WW1 Vocabulary Allied Powers – an alliance during WW1 consisting of Great Britain, France, Russia, Italy, and the United States. Trench warfare – soldiers fought in trenches Bolsheviks – a radical socialist group in Russia, led by Vladimir Lenin, who overthrows the government. Armistice – a ceasefire in the fighting. Treaty of Versailles – the peace treaty to end WW1, signed by the Big Four (U.S., British, French, and the Italians). Fourteen Points – President Woodrow Wilson’s plan for peace after WW1. League of Nations – an international peacekeeping organization, formed in hopes of prevent future wars.

4 Balfour Declaration – Great Britain promises the Jews a homeland in Palestine (ancient Israel).
Reparations – payments for the cost of war.
