8.7 Objective: Vocabulary:
Unit 2: Support & Movement 8.7 Aim: How do the bones and muscles work together to move? AGENDA Introduction Mini-Lesson Summary Work Period Exit Slip Do Now Objective: I will describe the anatomy and physiology of skeletal muscle movements. Vocabulary: Origin, insertion, prime mover, agonist, synergist, antagonist, fixator, flexion, extension

Bending or straightening of elbow requires the coordinated interplay of the biceps and triceps muscles

Muscle Teamwork Muscles usually work in pairs or groups to move our bones. This occurs at MOVABLE JOINTS. (hips, elbow, shoulder, knee, etc…). When a muscle contracts, usually just ONE bone moves. The other is STATIONARY.  The ORIGIN is where the muscle joins the stationary bone. The INSERTION is where it joins the moving bone. When a muscle contracts, the insertion moves TOWARD the origin.

Muscle Teamwork Agonist (PRIME MOVER): - the muscle or group of muscles producing a desired effect Antagonist: - the muscle or group of muscles OPPOSING the action Synergist: - the muscles surrounding the joint being moved Origin: - IMMOVABLE end of the muscle Insertion: - MOVABLE end of the muscle Fixators: - the muscle or group of muscles that steady joints. Sometimes called STABILIZERS. Flexion: the SHORTENING of a muscle Extension: the LENGTHENING of a muscle
