9 Questions… Name a major political difference between the North and South. Name a major economic difference between the North and South. Which side do you think had the better advantage in the war? Why?

10 G. Effects of the emancipation proclamation:
Lincoln’s plan freed the slaves in the rebellious south but not the Border states; creation of the 54th Massachusetts (first all black regiment).

11 H. Surrender at Appomattox Court House:
Lee surrenders to Grant in Virginia.

12 I. Results of the War: Power of the national government strengthened* - no more threat of secession. Destruction of the South* - Gen. Sherman’s “March to the Sea” where he destroys plantations, towns, railroads and burns Atlanta to the ground. End of slavery* - allows for the 13th amendment to be passed and ratified.

15 3. William Sherman led the Atlanta campaign to destroy Confederate resources and demoralize the people of the South. Known as Sherman’s March to the Sea.

Confederate general who turned back the union army at the first Battle of Bull Run/Manassas.
