1 To revise and develop our understanding of audience.

2 Audience Representation
Media texts depict different parts of their audience in their own ways: different ages, gender, ethnicities and places. The manner in which each aspect is depicted is called representation. Take a look at the women & men in Jaws – describe the representation of the characters with two adjectives. Take into consideration: Facial expression and body language Clothes, props, and settings

3 Women in Jaws Students should come to the conclusion that women are represented as either in distress or in shock. They never attempt to hunt the shark, and often remain away from the action.

4 Men in Jaws The leading three characters are all men, who are also the ones to hunt the shark. They carry weapons, work the boat, drink beer and later crush the can.

5 Gender Representation in Jaws
How are men supposed to react to the film? Why? How are women supposed to react to the film? Why?

7 D.C.S.E Exemplar Paragraph How are women and men represented in Jaws?
D = What do you see in the images? C = What are the connotations of the image? S = What do the facial expressions, body language, clothes, and items signify? E = What is the effect on the audience? How might men react? How might women react? How are women and men represented in Jaws? In this image, Quint is shown with a menacing look, crushing a can of beer. This connotes that Quint is a dangerous and reckless character. The crushing of the can signifies disregard to rules, as most littered cans are often crushed. In addition, the crushing could signify a need to hurt and destroy, which could represent Quint to the audience as a symbolic figure for men, which in the film are hunting a shark with the intention of killing it.

10 Release Dates Films do not only consider WHO will be watching, but also WHEN the audience will be watching it. When would be the best time of the year to release the following films? Students should be thinking of the seasons with the most free time – summer and winter (Christmas). Action-packed films (blockbusters) are released in the summer (May-July), while family and holiday films are released in December.
