1. Summer Reading Workshop
You will write an in-class summer reading style analysis on September 7th. These Thinking Maps and short answer responses will prepare you for the summer reading essay.

2. What steps should I take to prepare for the essay?
Read the book! Yep, that is important. 
Highlight/annotate your novel.
Complete all the assigned Thinking Maps in your journal.
Have active discussions over your summer reading novel.
Use the correct SAR format demonstrated.

3. Subordinate step one: Setting Circle map. DUE ___8/31___.
Create a CIRCLE MAP about the setting(s) in your summer reading novel.
Below your circle map, answer the question, “How does the setting impact decisions the primary character makes?”
Include one quote (with page number) to support this point.

4. Subordinate step two: Conflict multi-flow map. Due __8/31____.
In your reader’s/writer’s journal, create a multi- flow map that discusses why the protagonist makes a critical decision and the impact of that decision.
Include below your map a significant quote to support a point you are making.

5. Subordinate step three; character bubble map. Due _8/31_____.
In your reader’s/writer’s journal, create a bubble map describing the main character in your novel.
Include a description of the values that motivate your character and a significant quote to support that point.

6. Subordinate step four: Double bubble maps for secondary characters

Create two double bubble maps that compare the main character to two different characters in the text.
Show the relationships those characters have with the main characters.

7. Subordinate step five: Tree map for literary elements. Due _8/31___.
Create a tree map in your reader’s/writer’s journal that reviews at least three literary elements found in your book. These might include symbolism, narrator, allusion, etc. Use what you see in your book.
Provide a quote to support the impact of at least one of those elements.

8. Summer Reading Short Answer Response Options (choose 2) 8/31
Explain how the author uses 1-2 literary device(s) to express the internal conflict of the novel.
How does the author use 1-2 literary device(s) to reveal characterization?
How does the author use diction to develop characterization?
How does a conflict of the story help develop the overall theme?
How does the character’s motivations help advance the plot of the novel?

These are due at the beginning of class on 8/31. You will be spending your time in class on 8/31 preparing and finishing your Summer Reading Reflection for the formative grade.
