This is what you will find on the BLOG Page under Disability-

DISABILITY Consider the impact of the representation on the audience.
Do we feel some form of personal attachment OR affinity to the character for trying to overcome a dilemma/obstacle? Do they succeed OR fail?

DISABILITY Make sure your examples are always tied into the area of representation (we will go through this on the next slide) YOU SHOULD try and follow a Point – Evidence – Analysis structure, for example: Point – The representation of disability as being a burden and something that is a weakness is expressed in the sequence through the use of camera. Evidence – For example, the technical code of a high camera angle is used to represent CHARACTER to be… Analysis – This example signifies how the audience will understand this stereotype of people who are disabled as being…. And would in the process feel…

Main Task – 20 Minutes Disability Example YOU MUST analyse EACH the technical areas below to establish HOW Disability is represented in the sequence from….. YOU SHOULD divide your exercise books into 4 columns and make notes on EACH of the technical areas – YOU SHOULD aim to identify 3-4 examples fro EACH Technical area. You will be shown the sequence FOUR TIMES and you will need to make notes/plan your answer in between each screening. YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO MAKE NOTES DURING THE FIRST SCREENING.

Answer the Question: 1. Discuss the ways in which the extract constructs the representation of Disability using the following: 1 minute – Write your introduction. 10 minutes – Camera shots, angles, movement, composition 10 minutes – Editing 10 minutes – Sound 10 minutes – Mise-en-scene “The use of technical area represents Disability to be…” 2 minutes – Conclusion 2 minutes – Proof read your answer and check you followed a PEA structure.

FEEDBACK

Camera – The technical code of a broken frame helps to establish the man’s disability as being….

The use of shot reverse shot ‘signifies’ the disabled man as being an outsider as well as a burden for the working man of society.

The non-verbal code of the mans facial expression towards the disabled man connotes…

The female gender is frightened and therefore feels threatened by the horrifying nature of the scars. How do we feel?

What do these shots represent to the audience?

The cuts away from the man walking amongst the rest of the society establishes the stereotypes towards men who are visibly disabled, such as …. How does the non-diegetic soundtrack add to this “atmoshpere”?

Sound The diegetic dialogue – “I scare people, don’t I!”; “I’m ugly and scary”;

Sound The diegetic dialogue – “Scare the sh*t out of your bird!”

YOU WILL NEED TO COMPLETE THIS FOR HOMEWORK.
Remainder of the lesson: YOU MUST go onto the Blog and look at the Sexuality section.
