1 What is the Internet? Global system of interconnected computer networks – a network of networks! Hartland Consolidated Schools network Network at your house (internet provider could be Charter Communication or AT&T)

2 What is the World Wide Web?
An information system on the Internet that allows documents to be connected to other documents by hypertext links, enabling the user to search for information by moving from one document to another. Uses browsers to find and read documents. The documents are formatted in a markup language called HTML.

3 The Web is a Portion of The Internet
The Web is just one of the ways that information can be disseminated over the Internet. The Internet, not the Web, is also used for  , which relies on SMTP, Usenet news groups, instant messaging and FTP. So the Web is just a portion of the Internet, albeit a large portion, but the two terms are not synonymous and should not be confused.

8 Browser Web browser is a software application used to locate, retrieve and display content on the World Wide Web, including Web pages, images and video.

9 GUI Graphical user interface (GUI) takes advantage of the computer's graphics capabilities to make the program easier to use with pointing devices, menus and icons.

10 HTML Short for HyperText Markup Language, HTML is the authoring language used to create documents on the World Wide Web.

11 Protocol Protocol is an agreed-upon format for transmitting data between two devices. It determines type of error checking and data compression used.

12 User Interface The junction between a user and a computer program. An interface is a set of commands or menus through which a user communicates with a program.

13 Cookie Also called a permanent cookie, or a stored cookie, a cookie that is stored on a user’s hard drive until it expires (persistent cookies are set with expiration dates) or until the user deletes the cookie. Persistent cookies are used to collect identifying information about the user, such as Web surfing behavior or user preferences for a specific Web site.

14 Weebly Weebly is a free webpage creation site. It uses a widget style format, allowing users to create pages with only a few clicks. The user drags and drops different page elements (such as images, text, and Google Maps) onto a page and fills in the content. 

15 Router A router links computers to the Internet, so users can share the connection. A router acts as a dispatcher, choosing the best path for information to travel so it's received quickly.

16 Packet A piece of an internet page, holds data that can “create” that page Pages are broken down into packets so they travel faster on the internet

17 Bit Binary code is used by computers
Base “language” understood by all computers Each digit is called a “bit” (binary digit) Usually grouped together in groups of 8 8 bits is called a byte The speed of a computer depends to some degree on how many bits can be processed at once 32 bit computer – can process 32 bit numbers
