They had branch banks as far away as Flanders. The Medici family ruled Florence for many years. Florence, Italy- First major center of the Renaissance Wealth & central location attracted many artists, writers, & architects It gained its wealth from making cloth & banking. Florentine bankers used the gold florin to measure value of other money.

Made many more books available to people. People were learning to read and think for themselves. 1455-Gutenberg prints first European book, the Christian Bible. More books were printed in the first 50 years of the printing press than had been printed up to 1450. ½ of the 40,000 books printed by 1500 were religious.

14 William Shakespeare 1564-1616 Wrote tragedies, comedies, & histories
Based ideas for his plays on histories from England and ancient Rome. Famous plays: Romeo & Juliet, Macbeth, & Henry V. Take notes in your comp book Renaissance moved to Northern Europe in the late 1400s It reached its height in England during the rule of Elizabeth I during the late 1500s.
