Most lesbian, gay, bisexual people are comfortable with their own biological sex. It is not the same as being transgender. No one knows what really causes sexual orientation. Some individuals find out in their middle childhood, others in adulthood years, some may say they were born that way. People who are lesbian, gay, and bisexual work in all types of jobs and live in all types of situation .

11 Culture Competency and LBGT
Clients may prefer a specialized therapist in LGBT or one who is LGBT BUT... if you are not here are some things that might help :) Know all terminology. What terms are appropriate to use. Ask what term they prefer. Do not make assumptions and attribute everything to LGBT. Educate yourself beforehand, do not use this time to discover about the culture. Do not attribute pathology to LGBT. Do not place all the stresses on LGBT. Do not underestimate the impact of being LGBT. Educate yourself on current political issues 1973- American Psychiatric Association removed homosexuality from DSM-V 2003-Lawrence vs Texas- Landmark decision by the US Supreme Court. Struck down sodomy laws in Texas and 13 other states, making same-sexual activity legal in the US. -Davina Kotulski, Ph. D. Remember your AOTA Code of Ethics and Ethics Standards!
