1 Vertical Pressure Filters

2 Vertical Pressure Filters Presentation Overview
Typical Applications General Design Sizing Media selection Backwash method Product Features

3 Vertical Pressure Filters
Typical Applications GROUNDWATER Fe & Mn Removal LOW FLOW RATES (< 700 GPM) Above this rate horizontal pressure filters or gravity filters become more economical MAINTAIN LINE PRESSURE Pump from well to elevated storage Eliminate need for re-pumping OFTEN USED WITH PRESSURE AERATION Reduces operating costs by using air for iron oxidation

4 Vertical Pressure Filters
General Design - Size Sizing Based on flow: 2-3 gpm/sf – Ten States Standards Number of units depends on redundancy and backwash requirements Standard Sizes Diameter 42” to 144” (6” increments) Side Shell Height (SSH) 60”

5 Vertical Pressure Filters
General Design - Media Media Selection Depends on water content Standard media is mm sand Good for up to 2 ppm iron Higher Fe requires more solids capacity Anthracite Dual media Manganese removal requires manganese dioxide coated media such as Manganese ANTHRA/SAND or greensand

6 Vertical Pressure Filters
General Design - Backwash Backwash Method Depends on water, solids loading, and chemical feeds Water wash: Standard, least cost, least effective Air followed by water: Optional, higher cost, more expensive Improved cleaning effectiveness needed if iron bacteria, polymer feed, or high solids present Extends media life and helps prevent mud balling and channeling

7 Vertical Pressure Filters
Product Features – Pressure Vessels STANDARD PRESSURE RATING 100 psi standard, 50, 75, 125 available Test pressure = 1.3 x working pressure Construction Non-code: Standard, lowest cost ASME Code with stamp: Optional, higher cost Structural Steel Legs: 4 per Filter Paint Shop prime on exterior Finish coat on interior above underdrain plate

8 Vertical Pressure Filters
Product Features – Internal Distributors UNDERDRAIN Standard: Shop installed flat steel plate with ABS nozzle distributors Optional: Field installed header lateral with stainless steel baffle distributors OVERDRAIN Located to provide min. 50% expansion during backwash Center collection for tanks < 8 ft dia Header lateral for tanks 8 ft dia or larger AIR SCOUR Optional. Field installed PVC header lateral Grid set at gravel – media interface

9 Vertical Pressure Filters
Standard Configuration 50% Freeboard 60” SSH 24” filter sand 10” graded gravel steel plate underdrain Backwash Method: Water only from in-service cells

10 Vertical Pressure Filters
Product Features - Piping FRONT PIPING Sch 40 steel pipe Cast Iron fittings Flanged connections Shop primed on exterior

11 Vertical Pressure Filters
Product Features - Valves BUTTERFLY VALVES STANDARD Wafer style standard Flanged valves optional MANUAL OR AUTOMATIC Automatic valves are pneumatic open/close standard Electric motor actuators available

12 Vertical Pressure Filters
Product Features - Controls DIFFERENTIAL PRESSURE ASSEMBLY Contains pressure gauges and switch Pressure switch automatically initiates backwash at 3.5 psid BACKWASH RATE OF FLOW Orifice indicator standard Rate set at start up with manual rate set valve CONTROL PANEL PLC Based: Allen Bradley Allows manual, semi-auto, or fully automatic backwash
