1 Wednesday, May 14th, 2014 Endangered: Leatherback sea turtle (Dermochelys coriacea) Kingdom: Animalia Class: Reptilia Order: Testudines Family: Dermochelyidae The leatherback is the largest, deepest diving, & most migratory/wide ranging of all sea turtles. Adult leatherbacks can reach ft in length & lbs in weight.

2 Do Now: May 14th Place these levels of organization in order from smallest  largest: biosphere, population, ecosystem, organism Give 1 example of a biotic factor & 1 example of an abiotic factor. Is biodiversity good for an ecosystem? Why or why not?

3 Habitat vs. Niche Habitat: place/”address” where organism lives
Niche: species’ role/”job” in its community E.g., my habitat is Swansboro HS; my niche in this habitat is a biology teacher

4 Limiting Factor Biotic or abiotic factor that restricts growth or amount of orgs in a specific environment Examples: Water, food, space

5 Producer vs. Consumer Autotroph: Start of food chain Heterotroph:
Make own food Photosynthesis or chemosynthesis Start of food chain Heterotroph: Get food from others 4 Types:

6 1. Herbivore “Primary” consumer Eats plants only

7 2. Carnivore “Secondary,” “Tertiary,” or “Quaternary” consumer
Eats meat only Predator: hunts & kills Scavenger: feeds on already dead orgs

8 3. Omnivores: Eat both plants & animals

9 4. Decomposer Break down detritus (dead, decaying orgs) outside cells
Absorb nutrients through cell wall E.g., bacteria & fungi

10 Trophic Levels Feeding levels in energy transfer along food chain

11 Trophic Pyramid  trophic level=  individuals, energy, & biomass
Biomass: amount of organic matter Only 10% passed up to next level Other 90% converted to unusable forms (e.g., body heat)

12 Food Chain vs. Food Web Simple, single energy flow
1 feeding relationship BOTH: Arrow points in direction of energy flow Interdependent: when 1 pop changes, ALL pops change Complex energy flow in many directions Many feeding relationships

13 Food Web Poster Materials for each group:
1 set of pics (grassland, tropical rainforest, or temperate forest) Scissors Glue Colored pencils/markers 1 large piece of paper/poster

14 Food Web Poster Create food web using provided images (4pts)
Draw 2 original pictures AND the sun (3pts) Label each picture w/ 2 pieces of info: (8pts) Autotroph or heterotroph AND Producer, Primary consumer, Secondary consumer, Tertiary consumer, or Decomposer Link pictures w/ arrows pointing in direction of energy flow (4pts)
