26
Health and Nutrition: Parent Homework
Fill out Free Lunch Form (All Parents) Vision, hearing, Immunizations up to date Ensure scholar gets 9 hours sleep or more A Health Plan need not be a big document. We really hope our parents just have a strategy for raising healthy young men. Our boys are, on average, extremely unhealthy. Make sure you set ground rules at home for what you bring into the house and how much of what is in the house gets eaten at one time. You also need ground rules for bed time. Until they stop growing, your sons need a lot of sleep – more than they think (they should still get about 9-10 hours a night if not more). Lack of sleep diminishes their focus and memory and increases their aggression and irritability. Sex – Talk with your sons about sex. Single- moms; if you are uncomfortable, get somebody who both you and your son are comfortable with for him to talk to. If they figure this out on their own, the results will not be good (this should be a part of your Value discussion but you need to get into specific, practical issues as well). Even if your son has had “the talk”, conversations should be on-going because his curiosity is ever-increasing and he may already be “experimenting” and you don’t know. You should ask very direct questions and answer his.

Academic Excellence Genesis Innovation academy
35
Academic Excellence: Recognition
Year End Academic Recognition Academic Honor Lists Top Scholars in Course/Subject Milestone Top Performers Scholars must meet the standard Break work – Many parents are upset about FLA giving work over the break. Honestly, many high performing countries are in school way more than we are and work all day and year round. We don’t want that, but we do want a little bit of reading, review, and practice, especially for struggling students. If your son is struggling, he doesn’t need a break all day every day for a week or during the summer. Read – Your son should always be reading a book (a novel). Drill on Math basics – This is a given for struggling students. For others, they should be able to explain why basic math problems work the way they do. If not, make them find out. Eliminate distractions – They should not be allowed TV, Video Games, etc. during the week. They can read, study, or clean-up.
36
Academic Excellence: Grade Policy
Independent Assessments (Tests, Quizzes, Independent Work) & Projects will count most Homework is mostly for “Effort grade” Homework is for scholars not parents Late Work is reduced 10 points per day Don’t Expect Make-up Work or Extra Credit Break work – Many parents are upset about FLA giving work over the break. 37
Academic Excellence: Promotion Policy
Promotion Requires Scholars to score: 70 or above in core classes/subjects At grade level on Milestones Tests (Grades 3, 5, 8) Don’t Expect Make-up Work or Extra Credit If Scholar Recommended for Retention: Possible Summer Credit Recovery Parent Meeting & Academic Success Plan Break work – Many parents are upset about FLA giving work over the break. Academic Excellence: Parent Commitment
Check Agenda / Bag / Homework Every Day Check Power School Regularly Cordially direct questions to faculty and staff Promote educational songs, games, videos, apps at home, in the car, etc. Ensure scholar always has a book to read Drill scholar on math basics & ask to solve verbal problems Notes on Key Points: Require Explanation – You don’t have to understand the content but you should understand his explanation. If he can’t explain it, he doesn’t understand it. Period. Responsibility – Do not allow your son to blame the teacher. Many boys don’t look at the board or write down instructions and then tell their parents the teacher didn’t give them instructions. Then the parent s or visits the teacher to protest. Your son has to learn to manage this process. Support him by asking him if he asked the teacher or a fellow scholar (they can find each other when they want to), or if he wrote instructions down or took notes. Ask to see his notes. If he doesn’t have any, please don’t let him say the teacher didn’t say anything. If the teacher really is at fault, address the teacher away from your son and explain what happened later. He cannot begin to believe that the adults are at odds. He will use it to his advantage. Agenda should have something in it, homework should be done (I don’t have any is not an excuse – studying is homework) Check Power School regularly. Don’t wait until the end of the grading period and say you didn’t know he was failing, and then blame the school for not letting you know. Power School is how we let you know. And if we are being irresponsible, that is even more reason for you to check.
39
DISCIPLINE Discipline is not simply about punishing a child. It is about the way in which we ensure our young men are self-managed and therefore able to do what is required of them, when it is required of them, and how it is supposed to be done. The hope is that they will do what they should do because they simply want to do the best they can be at all times. Discipline - Systematic instruction given to disciples to train them as students in the performance of an activity, or to follow a particular code of conduct or "order".
40
Values and Character Parent Commitment:
Constantly teach and remind child about values of your faith / belief system Do not accept excuses for poor behavior Practice what you preach!! Our children pay more attention to what we do than what we say This is really about the vision of who you want your son to be. Many parents struggle with making sure their son is not a “punk” (whatever we think that means). Remember that middle school and high school are relatively short periods in his life. If you want your son to become a college-educated husband, father, and professional (and a good son) you have to train him that way. Google, IBM, and the folks on Wall Street aren’t looking to hire young men who can claim “I ain’t no punk”. That is not relevant in their world. If they practice bad habits trying to fit in with the predominate culture of this generation of Hip-Hop influenced young boys, they won’t be ready for success in the next phase of their lives. So tell him everyday, starting now if you haven’t already, who he is and who you want him to be. Teach him the values of your faith (or your belief system) and make him read about it and study it. He has to know what grounds him and why. And if he falls short of what he should be in this area (he’s lying/deceiving, being disrespectful, etc.), accept no excuses and bring down fire and brimstone, because you have to get this part right. Above all, practice what you preach. Don’t scream, shout, cuss, lie, steal and tell him not to do it. Don’t treat your significant other (or ex) with anger and contempt and expect your son to understand how to exercise restraint and patience. He internalizes what you do more than what you say.
41
Supplies and Organization
Parent Commitment: Make sure scholar has adequate supplies (i.e. more than one pencil) Check book-bags and binders daily for supplies and organization of work Check that uniform meets expectations Be warned that we will crack down hard on this going forward. Lack of supplies may seem like a small issue to many parents, but it is not. Even still, it is the small foxes that spoil the vine.
42
