1 Senior English Electives
All electives satisfy English Language Arts requirements for the District and colleges All electives are semester-long – expect to choose at least two All electives are writing-intensive – expect to write frequently and at a sophisticated level; all electives require at least three analytic essays

2 JUNIOR YEAR: You are now allowed to take English Electives – but there are a few guidelines: You must ALSO enroll in English III or AP Language You will be required to take 2 Electives Senior year The class will count as a “free elective” – not as an English credit

3 This class will be helpful if you want a future in
Sales Advertising communication/media/ Journalism Graphic design Education Entertainment Or just take it for fun! See Mrs. Coleman if you want to know more. Study what makes a good literature and then write your own poems, short stories, and more. You will WRITE DAILY to explore creative ways to express your own interpretation about yourself and the world around you.

4 MAN, MYTH, and MONSTER This class explores: MAN – the hero
MYTH – Greek Mythology MONSTER – Fictional monsters (like Frankenstein and other classic monsters) and real life ones (like serial killers) This year, Ms. Janus-Doyle, Mr. Pyzik and Ms. Sherrick teach this class…. But next year it could be one, two, all three or none of us!

Film & Literature Critically Analyze Film Analyze the ways movie directors use camera angles, editing, lighting, set design, sound, and camera movement to create important pieces of art. Study films as author driven texts that have purpose and deeper meaning. Dive into the world of various filmmakers and genres to explore the ways in which classic and modern cinema reflects the world around us. **SEE MR. PYZIK FOR DETAILS**

African-American Literature American art, music, and literature are all influenced by African-Americans Trace history’s impact on African-American culture and African-American culture’s impact on history **SEE MS. McKIMSON FOR DETAILS**

7 Theatre Performance Do you like literature but want to do more than just read it? Consider acting it out! Be introduced to all aspects of theatre performance (staging, blocking, acting, improvisation, and interpretation) This class also sees live performances to enhance your understanding of acting and theatre. **See Mrs. Carlson for details**

8 The Real World This course will be based on CURRENT EVENTS.
We will utilize HBO’s VICE series as our starting points. Non-Fiction works include: documentaries, articles, magazines, newspapers, etc. *SEE MRS. JANUS-DOYLE*

9 Best Selling Novels Experience horror, mysteries, science fiction, realistic fiction, fantasy, and other genres Find the genre you want to read for the rest of your life

10 Contemporary British Literature
: Women’s Literature This course will focus on women authors and gender issues You will engage in discussion and analysis of important social concepts as seen in: books, movies, the media, and the real world

11 Take Writing for Newspaper!
Write about events and issues happening at Richards Develop photography skills Learn to use PhotoShop and InDesign Work on Web design for online Newspaper Interview students, teachers, coaches and administrators Take field trips Compete in IHSA journalism competition Earn credit for class and club Check the newspaper out at SEE MRS. SHERRICK FOR AN APPLICATION
