1 WORLD MAP OF SITES OF ENCOUNTER

ITALIAN PENINSULA MAP SPACE This space is used to draw the outlines of the earth’s continents (excluding Antarctica). to create a world map. Eight places called “sites of encounter will be marked at various locations on the map. The back side is used to write eight paragraphs. Each paragraph will explain on site of encounter marked on the world map. Read the map instructions for further details. 12 cm CITY OF ROME MAP SPACE A site of encounter is a place where people from different cultures meet and exchange products, ideas, and technologies.

2 INSTRUCTIONS TO DO WORLD MAP OF SITES OF ENCOUNTER
A. Front Side 1. Divide an 11 x 17 inch sheet of paper into three parts as shown on the example. The largest area will be the graded part. 2. Write the title as shown on the example. 3. Write the definition of “site of encounter” as shown on the example. 4. Using a pencil only, use a world map as a reference to draw large shapes of the continents. Do not draw Antarctica. 5. Next, the student will work with other students in a group. a. Use the entire textbook to identify eight sites of encounter (using the definition as a guide). b. One site of encounter will be identified for each region (a city or smaller culture area within a region): 1) North America, 2) South America, 3) West Africa, 4) East Asia, 5) Southwest Asia, 6) Spain, 7) Eastern Rome Empire, 8) Western Roman Empire. c. When a site is identified, it is marked on a continent with a dot, the name of the site, and the reference number (1-8). d. Once students have identified all eight sites of encounter, students will read and discover information that can be used to write a paragraph for each site on the back side of the student’s map paper. IF THE STUDENT IS UNABLE TO IDENTIFY A SITE, THE TEACHER WILL PROVIDE SOME HELP. B. Back Side 1. The student works with students in a group to write a paragraph draft for each site of encounter on scratch paper. The paragraph should explain how the location marked on the map matches the definition for site of encounter. a. Here is a possible model to write each paragraph: TOPIC SENTENCE - “_____________________ was a site of encounter in ____________________.” SENTENCE concrete detail – proof or example that the site fits the definition. SENTENCE explains sentence #2 – the commentary. More than one commentary sentence may be needed. SENTENCE closing (like a summary). b. When the student is satisfied with the paragraph, it and the others (a total of eight) are written as final drafts on the back of the map paper. IT IS EACH STUDENT’S RESPONSIBILITY TO FINISH THE WORK FOR THIS GRADED ASSIGNMENT. THIS IS NOT A GROUP GRADE (the name of the side) (name of the region)
