1 Lesson Starter What is the purpose of the rings of cartilage in the wind pipe? Describe the function of the alveoli in the lungs. Describe the changes in the diaphragm, lungs and ribcage when you breathe in compared to when you breathe out

2 Learning Intention To learn about the effect of an unhealthy diet and lack of exercise on the body

3 Effect of a Poor Diet Direct relationship between diet and health
Diet high in fat/sugar- lack of healthy food and exercise Overweight High BP, heart disease, Strokes, gallstones, diabetes, cancer, arthritis

4 High-Fat Diet Obesity High cholesterol- block arteries
Restrict blood flow Blocked arteries High BP, Heart attack, stroke

Hypertension Heart attack and stroke

6 Effect of a Poor Diet (copy)
There is a direct relationship between a person’s diet and their health. A diet high in fat can cause obesity which in turn can put a strain on our hearts. A diet high in cholesterol can learn to arteries becoming blocked. This causes an increased blood pressure and can increase the risk of heart attacks or strokes. A diet high in salt can also lead to an increase in blood pressure and an increased risk to the diseases associated with it.

7 Exercise Prevents obesity – colon cancer, type 2 diabetes, heart attack, stroke Calorie balance Increase circulation- Deep Vein Thrombosis Recommended age 5-18 do one hour of physical exercise

8 Bar Graph Type of exercise carried out by S3 class

9 Exercise (copy) Regular exercise and an active lifestyle prevents obesity and increases circulation (blood flow) to the muscles. Obesity has a number of risks associated with it including development of type 2 diabetes, colon cancer, heart attacks and stroke. Poor circulation is a risk factor for deep vein thrombosis (DVT) – when veins get blocked causing damage to the limbs affected. It is recommended that children aged 5-18 do a minimum of 1 hour physical exercise EVERY DAY.
