Identities can be tied to our sense of place, an area’s uniqueness, in an area
Impacts how we define and experience places
Sense of Place can change just like identity

Jews/Palestinians and Israel
Native Americans and the lands of the U.S.
Australia Aborigines and Uluru
Hindus and the River Ganges
Muslims and Mecca/Kabah

4. Ethnicity
Affiliation with or identity within a group of people bound by common social, ancestral, cultural, religious, or national experience
Can change with place, space, and scale
Irish Americans may have a different idea of what Irish is than people from Ireland
Myanmar consists of various ethnic groups, however members of these different groups living in America may identify ethnically as Burmese

5. Ethnicity Cont.
Ethnicity can refer to any or all of these qualifiers: common social, ancestral, cultural, religious, or national experience
Jews-ethnicity primarily means religion
Amish-both a folk culture and religion
Swiss-Americans: a national origin
These aspects of ethnic groups can lead to stereotypes of not only those within the group but other ethnically unrelated groups

Norms, mores, and taboos are established within cultures to encourage “normal” practices
Practices such as homosexuality and incest have traditionally been viewed as taboo
Some practices may gradually come to be accepted (homosexuality), others may not (incest)
Heteronormative: straight, white, male views impact societal thinking
Queer Theory: Tension between heterosexuals and homosexuals, especially politically
Why do these views and values supersede others?
