4 Our Vision, Target and Mission
To make London the most physically active city in the world Our Target Getting 1,000,000 Londoners more active by 2020 Our Mission Helping physical activity and sport to work better in London Is this the right Vision? The Vision for London is difficult to measure accurately, as different countries have different measurements. But that doesn’t matter. It is designed to set a clear direction and appetite; not merely to improve, but set the standards for the rest of the world to follow. Why is it important? It’s not just about the physical activity, it’s about its benefits: • 1m Londoners likely to live longer • 1m Londoners likely to be happier • 1m Londoners less likely to develop serious chronic illnesses • 1m Londoners less likely to suffer from mental health issues

12 Cricket Clubs are facing a challenging environment – Securing funding has never been more important
Many Clubs are: Facing Financial pressures due to increased costs and difficulty in retaining / recruiting new members Unable to repair and modernise Buildings / Infrastructure Struggling to retain / find volunteers at a time when governance requirements are increasing

13 How to secure funding and address the challenging environment facing Cricket Clubs?
The right “mind set” and right approach is just as important as knowing what funding opportunities are available Improving financial performance can be just as important as securing external funding

14 The right “Mind Set”: How to increase your chances of securing external funding (1)
Talk to the Surrey Cricket Foundation - if capital, look at ECB’s Technical Specifications before your start Not just “cricket for cricket’s sake” Make connections with wider agendas – health and wellbeing, social inclusion and social cohesion Understand the role that the Club plays in the local community Who are the partners / stakeholders you can work with Who do you need to consult with and involve to increase participation by low participant groups

15 The right “Mind Set”: How to increase your chances of securing external funding (2)
What other compatible sports / uses could be encouraged The Club needs to be a year round operation If capital, how can new investment secure reduced running costs Secure as much external support as possible

16 The right Approach: How to increase your chances of securing external funding (1)
Ensure appropriate Governance arrangements are in place (eg “Club Mark”) Choose the “right people” to lead on funding bids Put the right level of internal support in place (if capital there will need to be effective project management) Be clear about roles and responsibilities

17 The right Approach: How to increase your chances of securing external funding (2)
Consider the Business Case for proceeding before you start Have “neighbour” and planning issues been considered Do you have the evidence to support your bid Be realistic about what you can bid for, based on researching funding criteria Be aware of how to properly cost a capital project

18 Types of Grant funding Revenue Capital
Non-fixed equipment, Sports and physical activity projects and Training Examples: Bats, balls, pads etc Programmes to encourage low participant groups Safeguarding Training Coach Education / Training - Not ongoing Repair and Maintenance Building, Infrastructure and Fixed equipment Examples: Land Purchase Drainage Improvements Practice Nets Changing Room improvements Disabled Access - Loans, as well as Grants - Sometimes Feasibility Studies

19 Key Sport and Physical Activity Project Funders Governing Body of Sport – ECB / Surrey Cricket Foundation Sport England London Marathon Charitable Trust London Mayor County Sports Partnerships (for small SE funds) Foundations and independent charities eg. the Weston Anniversary Fund Private organisations, e.g. through sponsorship Philanthropists Members of Cricket Clubs (loans / levies)

20 Funding Climate right now......
ECB are clear about their funding programmes Sport England funding programmes for 2018 and beyond not yet clarified London Mayor Sports Strategy and funding priorities to become clearer in the next few months Local Authority ability to fund and support significantly reducing Foundation and Trust funding opportunities still available Ability to secure sponsorship is challenging

29 London Mayor Will be launching a new Sports Strategy in the next few months. Funding will be available, but priorities still to be confirmed. It is likely that there will be a focus on community cohesion and encouraging inactive people to take part. This funding will only be available to London clubs. Not clear if previous funding programmes will continue

30 Foundations and Trusts
Example – The Weston Anniversary Fund (Garfield Weston Foundation) The Fund will award capital grants of £30k to £150k , to provide new or improve existing community facilities Will provide 100% Funding, but other funding helps, as does wide support from the local community. 31 Various Landfill Trusts
Veolia Environmental Trust Landfill Communities Fund If you’re located within the proximity of a Veolia landfill site this fund provides an opportunity to support you in making a difference locally: SUEZ- Landfill Communities Fund Two different tiers of grant are available ranging from £1- £250,000. The grant is available for improvements to Public Amenities, Historic Buildings and Biodiversity within proximity to a SITA site: BIFFA Landfill Communities Fund – “BIFFA Award” 3 themes – Community Buildings, Recreation and Rebuilding biodiversity CHECK YOUR POST CODE!

32 Crowdfunding – what do we know about it?
Principles: A large number of people give a small amount of money Organisations seeking funding set up an online project profile and use social media to engage their network Crowdfunding for sport is: Donation Crowdfunding Donors have a social or personal motivation for putting their money in and expect nothing back, although there are instances where donations are given with some ‘rewards’ This is an opportunity for both clubs and County organisations…..Devon FA example… BUT, be realistic – people more likely to give if there is a threat to something valued by the local community and/or there is an obvious community benefit.

33 Some platforms: crowdfunder.co.uk / justgiving.com / buzzbnk.org/ spacehive.com/ indiegogo.com

34 Crowdfunding Don’t need to be an expert but time and a team effort required Needs proactive marketing and a strong social media network

35 Crowdfunding Describe the project clearly and create a strong video
Think of some great rewards Plan the campaign timeline Plan to be active throughout the campaign, particularly mid-way through

36 Donation crowdfunding
Some interesting platforms: Further information: September 2015 London Sport update

37 Sponsorship Many businesses are keen to engage in sponsorship
Revenue and profile for clubs Needs to be viewed as a business arrangement (its not philanthropy) Options: Sponsorship fees e.g. for sponsoring the club kit, match, equipment etc. Provision of resources e.g. volunteers to help out at the club for the day or at an event Provision of products or services e.g. lighting systems or maintenance services

38 Other ways to raise funds/ improve financial performance (1)
Fundraising activities Sub leasing, hiring facilities, bookings Hold events (eg Fireworks night) Shared use with other sports clubs / organisations Philanthropy / Donations / Debentures

39 Other ways to raise funds/ improve financial performance (2)
Review Governance – CASC Status ? Consider becoming a Charity? Member loans / levies Sale of land Section 106 / Community Interest Levy (CIL) Persimmon “Healthy Communities Fund”

40 Conclusion Funding Environment is challenging and funding priorities are currently not clear in relation to some funders However, there are opportunities to secure external funding with the right “mind set”, the right approach and the right project / application Increasing emphasis on community benefit and social good – not just “cricket for cricket’s sake”
