Democracy Ancient Greeks: Direct democracy (all citizens vote on all matters) Representative Democracy (USA): citizens choose smaller group the represent them, make laws, & govern Republic: power ultimately in the people’s hands

Still have royalty (Kings, Queens, etc), but have a written constitution limiting their power Examples:

4 Democratic (cont.) Principles: Free, fair, competitive elections
“One person, one vote” Few restrictions on voting Choice of candidates Majority rule/minority rights

5 Authoritarian Governments
Absolute Monarchy Unlimited authority and power with the King Gone in Europe, but still in the Middle East Dictatorship Dictator has complete control Usually takes power by force Rely on police and military to keep order and retain power

6 Authoritarian (cont.) Totalitarianism Dictator +
Control all aspects of people’s lives No political opposition No dissent/protests Suppress freedom Use media for propaganda and military/violence to keep order
