1 Help I am a New Teacher! By: Michelle Green Wright, RN, BS, Med (VDOE – Specialist) Jan Rayl, RN, BSN, CRNI (PN Instructor FCPS)

2 Let’s make the pieces fit! “Fail to plan, plan to fail!”

3 Top 10 Rookie Mistakes: Remember: Making everything from scratch
Skipping lunch Thinking everyday is going to be perfect Not having a change of clothes at school Ignoring community connections Assuming parents are the enemy Giving up! Never advertise your inexperience!!

4 Now they are here what next?
Some “Must Do’s” Take Roll everyday, every class! Meet and help the custodians, office and support staff. You will need them! Do school work at school! Home is for family! Grade papers daily – I expect students to follow deadlines, I need to respect their timeliness I grade test and put online the same day

5 Now they are here what next?
Some “Must Do’s” Read your IEPs (Individual Education Plans) ASAP Week 1 the Goal and SDI parts (Specially Designed Instruction) Medical, Mental and Emotional Issues 504 Plans need to be read ASAP when you get them Know how to send them to the school nurse You may be A NURSE But you are not THE NURSE Know the concussion test and teaching plan

6 Now they are here what next?
Some “Must Do’s” Set the Rules and follow them – “I am the Queen of this classroom and you are my loyal subjects! Subject to a test at a moments notice. Only I make the rules.” “Always show respect, pay attention, do your best, you could need what is being taught to save the a life of someone you love!” Set your boundaries tight! It is easier to loosen them later!

7 Miss Rayl Worked at Goshen Boy Scout Camp for 15 Summers as the nurse!
Choose a few fun facts to share and have them share 3 as well! Get to Know you Day One

8 How will you be remembered?
Honor Code The first “real” lecture I do is on the Honor System How will you be remembered?

9 Top 10 Things for New Teachers to Know:
It is OK to tell students, “I don’t know!” Effective classroom management starts the first day! Always have high (but not impossible) expectations for your students and yourself Be friendly, but not friends with your students Practice consistency and fairness daily ~ Students will see through BS ~ Set the tone day one, this class is part of the Grown-up World. This could be your career. ~ Students will try to meet your expectations (Tell about Makenna) ~ Being friends gets teachers in to gray areas. Never be behind closed door alone with student, especially of opposite sex. ~ You can be flexible and make exceptions, but apply fairly. I move turn in dates if schools have IB Tests or other core projects exams and they ask me to move ~Greet all students at the door and make them feel welcome. The first few days I stand in the hall outside my door. I give direct them to pick up a handout and start to work day 1. Day 1 I do a pre-test with 2 questions for each of the six sections of my course ~ I will ask every student to come to my desk at least once each quarter to discuss where they are, the first 2 weeks to learn about them ~ Make friends with custodian! Keep your room neat.Have trash in the can! I bag party trash! Be flexible but not a doormat Smile at your students! Greet all who enter Avoid confrontation in front of other students Get to know custodians, colleagues, school staff choose friends and battles wisely!

22 Making it Interesting:
I can talk about dress code for lab and clinical or demonstrate in a fun way! I assigned the cell in class. Put up a big poster and gave them clay to make it based off the photo in their textbook. Communication – Director – me; Pt husband, nurse “Mr Bowers is mad that you did not heal his wife” If I assign it I have done it, read it, tried it Cardiac was a two week lesson we had them stitch the circulation of blood through the heard with yarn We did a Cardiac lecture with Cornell Notes so they can follow along Had them work in groups of four to look at the heart on the 3D Z-Space I assigned three Chapters to read and do a packet on the Cardiac System I dressed up like Cindy Lauper and told them they could dress up for “Cardiac Spirit Day” and we would play love songs while they worked. My shirt has all the vessels and structures of the heart labeled I had a group of students dress up as The Spice Girls
