2 Religious Freedom Jamestown and Roanoke were founded in hopes of making money. New England colonies were founded in search of religious freedom from persecution Those who wanted to reform (fix) the Anglican Church are Puritans Those who wanted to leave and set up their own church are separatists

Much more simple and strict than the Anglican Church Predestination- God already chose who is saved when he created Earth Meetinghouses- no decoration, few ceremonies Did not celebrate Christmas or Easter

6 New York City New York City used to be called New Amsterdam
New Amsterdam was founded by the Dutch in 1624 Dutch West India Company traded a small amount of beads and other items for all of Manhattan

11 Anne Hutchinson- Rhode Island
5 Anne Hutchinson- Rhode Island A.H. was outspoken about the rights of women in the Puritan church of Mass. Men in the community put her on trial and she was banished She moved to Rhode Island and set up a community there

12 Pennsylvania and the Quakers
William Penn was a member of a protestant group called the Quakers He founded Pennsylvania in 1682 Pennsylvania was a “Holy Experiment” Phil means love in Greek; therefore Philadelphia means “City of Love”

13 Quakers Quakers believe: All people are equal
Church leaders and services are not necessary as each person has their own “inner light” War is wrong for religious reasons- they are pacifists
