1 SHOCK Shock is an emergency condition. It can occur when blood volume is too low to meet the body’s needs. Areas of the body are deprived of oxygen. The result is damage to parts of the body such as the limbs, lungs,heart and brain.

2 Causes of Shock Heart attack Severe of sudden blood loss from a injury
Large drop in body fluids such as following a sever burn or vomiting, or diarrhea Blood poisoning from major infections Exposure of extreme heat or cold for too long

3 Other Factors Leading to Shock
Fractures of a large bone A severe allergic reaction Very low blood sugar (insulin shock) Excessive drinking of alcohol Drug overdose

4 Signs and Symptoms of Shock
Weakness, trembling Restlessness, confusion Pale or blue-colored lips, skin and/or fingernails Cool and moist skin Rapid, shallow pulse Nausea, vomiting and extreme thirst Enlarged pupils

5 Treatment of Shock Lay the person down, face up
Elevate the feet about 1 foot. This causes blood flow from the legs to the head and vital organs in the body Loosen tight clothing Cover person with coat or blanket to prevent heat loss. Do not give food or liquids
