10. Helping struggling readers
pupils need to establish early print concepts (directionality, one-to-one correspondence, concepts of words/ letters)
pupils need to understand how to become independent learners who can problem-solve on text
Teachers encourage this through using a range of prompts and specific praise
pupils need to be given the opportunity to self-correct
pupils need to access books that are carefully matched to their level of reading ability
