It was a war that started for no one particular reason. Europe was tangled in an alliance system. The new technologies were so advanced that the leaders did develop the proper strategies to use the weapons. The trench warfare system resulted in a war of attrition where millions were killed and it became a stalemate. Although Germany was worn-out it really had not been defeated. The Treaty of Versailles punished Germany so severely it led directly to the Rise of Dictators and WWII.
