English 9 Common Assessment Rubric Expectations

2 Rubric Expectations: Thesis Statement/ Claim
There is no thesis statement. Thesis statement takes a vague or general position or is summary of the story. Thesis statement takes a specific and arguable position. Thesis statement takes an insightful, specific, and arguable position.

3 Rubric Expectations: Organization
Essay has no introduction and/or conclusion Essay does not contain multiple body paragraphs. Introduction only contains thesis, conclusion only one sentence. Body paragraphs lack focus and/ or do not have topic sentences. No concluding sentences to tie ideas together. Essay has an introduction and conclusion. Each body paragraph focuses on one idea, summarized in a topic sentence. Paragraphs have concluding statements that tie everything together. Essay has an engaging introduction and conclusion. Each body paragraph focuses on one idea clearly linked to thesis and summarized in a topic sentence. All evidence is tied together in a concluding statement and/ or a strong conclusion.

4 Rubric Expectations: Evidence
Evidence does not support the thesis or there are less than 3 quotes. Evidence supports the thesis, but is too obvious or superficial. Essay contains only 3 quotes. Evidence supports the thesis or the main idea of the paragraph. Evidence is well chosen, specific, and supports the thesis. Examples are used in original ways.

5 Rubric Expectations: Analysis
Analysis does not support the thesis, does not fit the chosen evidence or is all summary. Analysis explains the evidence but not how it supports the thesis, repeats evidence or is summary. Analysis explains how each piece of evidence supports the thesis (or main idea of the paragraph). Analysis thoroughly explains how each piece of evidence supports the thesis.

6 Rubric Expectations: Language
No transitions. Quotes set apart from the paragraph. Repetitive word choice and awkward syntax. Personal pronouns used repeatedly. Transitions are awkward or repetitive. Some repetitive word choice and/or awkward syntax. Quotes are not embedded. Limited (one or two times) use of personal pronouns. Transitions are used appropriately. Word choice and syntax are appropriate. Quotes are embedded in sentences. No personal pronouns. Transitions between evidence and analysis are seamless. Word choice is varied; syntax is fluid. Quotes are fluidly embedded in sentences.

7 Rubric Expectations: Formatting
Quotes are not cited. Paragraph has multiple formatting issues. Quotes are not correctly cited. Paragraph has noticeable formatting issues. Quotes are cited with minor errors. Minor formatting errors. Quotes are perfectly cited and all formatting requirements are met.
