7 Civics- Study of citizenship and government
What does it mean to be a citizen? What are the duties and responsibilities of being a US citizen? An action a person is required to perform The opportunity or ability to act independently; to be accountable for something important

8 Government: a ruling authority that has the power to make and enforce in a community
Types of Government Dictatorship- ruler with total power, typically obtained by force Oligarchy- ruled by a small group of people Anarchy- no ruler… all for themselves Monarchy- ruled by King or Queen Theocracy- ruled by God Direct democracy- people vote firsthand for rulers Representative democracy- citizens choose a smaller group to govern on their behalf Limited government- gov’t only has powers given by the people FOUR functions of Government Keep order Settle conflicts Protect the community Provide organized services

13 If you’re not a citizen, you could be a(n)….
Alien: permanent resident who is not a citizen Illegal alien: undocumented resident Refugee: immigrant trying to escape dangers in home country

14 The US is sometimes called a Melting Pot because it has so many cultures. Everybody is different, but we exist together. It is also called a Salad Bowl because many people retain their culture instead of blending into an “American” culture.

15 The US has a QUOTA, so who gets residency first?
Immigration Act of 1990 says: People from countries that don’t have many US immigrants People with family members in the US People with jobs in the US

16 Your assignment Research both sides, Melting Pot theory or Salad Bowl theory, and prepare for a debate tomorrow. Fill out the following chart, you will be assigned a side when you come to class Friday. BE PREPARED FOR BOTH SIDES!
