2 The Axis Attacks Nazi Germany invaded Poland from one side with the blitzkrieg (lightning war), while the Soviets came from the other. France and Britain had no time to help.

3 The Axis Attacks Then Germany attacked France from the north, and Italy invaded from the south. They set up a puppet state with the capital of Vichy

4 The Axis Attacks Some French officers set up a government-in-exile in Britain under Charles De Gaulle When France fell, only Britain stood against the Axis powers.

5 The Axis Attacks A Nazi bombing campaign against London and other cities only strengthened British resolve. Meanwhile, Axis armies also pushed into North Africa and the Balkans.

6 Germany Invades Soviet Union
Hitler invaded the Soviet Union in June 1941 in the hopes of gaining its natural resources and putting down communism. Hitler’s advance was stalled by the brutal Russian winter, but Russians in Leningrad suffered a two-and-a-half-year siege that caused mass starvation.

The people who lived in lands occupied by the Nazis and the Japanese were often brutally treated. Hitler’s forces sent Polish and Soviet Slavs to work as slave laborers, and the Jewish people got the same and worse in Nazi “death camps.”

The Japanese killed and tortured Asians whom they claimed to help free from Western colonial rule.

10 Japan Attacks the U.S. When the U.S. banned the sale of war materials to Japan after its invasion of French Indochina, Japan and the U.S. participated in unsuccessful talks. Japanese General Tojo ordered an attack on the American fleet at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii

11 Japan Attacks the U.S. December 7, 1941
Happened just before 8 a.m. & lasted just two hours Hundreds of Japanese fighter planes attacked the American naval base at Pearl Harbor near Honolulu, Hawaii.

12 Japan Attacks the U.S. The Japanese managed to destroy nearly 20 American naval vessels, including eight enormous battleships, and almost 200 airplanes. More than 2,000 Americans soldiers and sailors died in the attack, and another 1,000 were wounded.

13 Japan Attacks the U.S. The day after the assault, President Franklin D. Roosevelt asked Congress to declare war on Japan Three days later, Germany and Italy (Japanese allies) declared war on the United States, and again Congress reciprocated. After 2+ years, America had finally joined World War II.
