Which leading Catholic nobleman narrowly escaped the same fate due to Henry’s own death on 28 January 1547? 4. What is a faction? 5. In the 1540s, which two factions fought for dominance at the Tudor court?

6 The aim of this lesson is to answer this question…
What was Henry VIII’s legacy? …in order to help us answer this bigger one: Historians understand the past by asking questions. Was there a Mid-Tudor crisis?

7 How will this help you pass the exam?
Sample extracts question: Using your understanding of the historical context, assess how convincing the arguments in these three extracts are in relation to the existence of a mid-Tudor crisis from 1538 to 1558.

8 How will this help you pass the exam?
Sample essay question: ‘The crisis faced by the Tudors in the years was primarily caused by economic factors.’ Assess the validity of this view. ‘The main cause of rebellions in the years 1536 to 1558 was religious disagreements.’ Assess the validity of this view. ‘Rebellions in the years 1549 to 1571 stemmed from the weakness of central government.’ Assess the validity of this view. Rebellions questions draw on the same knowledge as MTC ones – both analyse the nature of mid 16th c conflict. Note the timespan we have to consider for the MTC varies (generally means , but for Jones and for Loades and different again for AQA)

9 Edward VI b. 12 October 1537, d. 6 July 1553

11 A Mid Tudor Crisis? Bunk, debunk and rebunk
The reigns of Edward VI and Mary I were a time of crisis for the Tudor dynasty. W.R.D. Jones, The Mid-Tudor Crisis (1973) There were no serious threats to state or society. The success of Edward and Mary’s reigns have been underestimated. (Revisionist) D.M. Loades, The Mid-Tudor Crisis (revisionist, 1992) Edward and Mary were underachievers. The severity of their problems should not be underestimated. The Tudor dynasty survived rather than thrived. (Post-revisionist) John Matusiak, ‘Mid-Tudor England: Years of Trauma and Survival’ (post-revisionist article in History Review, 2005)

12 The mid-Tudor crisis: key factors
Factionalism Weakness of leadership and succession Religious upheaval Economic problems Foreign policy failures Rebellions

13 Think, pair, share 10 Read the list of Henry VIII’s achievements and label as many as you can with the Mid-Tudor Crisis factor(s) it contributed to. Label as strengths any achievements which strengthened rather than undermined the stability of the monarchy. Write down your answer to this question: which factor was the biggest threat to the Tudor monarchy in 1547, and why? Extension activity: invent a mnemonic for the Mid-Tudor crisis factors

14 Mnemonics use the first letters of words as a memory prompt.

15 The Headlines 10 Summarise the key problems Henry VIII handed on to Edward VI.
