Objectives: Consolidate Learning of power of Monarchy under Henry VII and Henry VIII Develop knowledge on power of the monarchy under Edward and Mary Develop skill of assessing change over time looking at continuity and change.

3 Henry VII In groups discuss:
How powerful was the Monarchy when Henry VII came to the throne? What problems Henry VII face in relation to the power of the monarchy? To what extent had he restored the power of the Monarchy by the end of his reign?

4 Henry VIII In groups discuss:
How powerful was the Monarchy when Henry VIII came to the throne? What problems Henry VIII face in relation to the power of the monarchy? To what extent had he restored/ increased the power of the Monarchy by the end of his reign?

5 Flow Diagram Produce a flow diagram that shows the changes in power of the monarchy through Henry VII and Henry VIII reigns: Henry VII: Council Learned in the Law, Acts of Attainder etc, improved finances and control of nobility, defeat of pretenders and rebellions, recognition by foreign monarchs. Henry VII: Coronation, changes date of start of reign, support of parliament, marriage Henry VII comes to power: Weak blood claim, Overmighty subjects, poor crown finances, instability from War of the Roses

7 Edward and Mary fundamentals of power
Edward and Mary ruled through a council of their choosing (though Edward’s was initially chosen for him) like their father and grandfather. Both faced and overcame rebellions. Both looked to control crown finances. Both controlled Foreign Policy and war

8 Edward and Mary developments of power
Edward and Mary both used the monarch’s power over religion developed by their father. Both looked to impose their wishes over succession. Mary used her prerogative powers to Marry who she chose despite opposition

9 Find evidence there was a Mid-Tudor crisis in terms of the power of the Monarchy?
Who was actually ruling? (Edward or Somerset then Northumberland- Mary or Philip/ Charles V) Decisions on marriage/ succession Decisions on religion Challenges to the Monarch’s power e.g. rebellion
