3 The very first European explorers are considered to be the first Vikings.

4 They are recognized as the first European explorers because their expeditions took place during the 10th century.

5 The Saga of Eric the Red was a first hand account of numerous Viking voyages.

6 Samuel de Champlain

7 Born 1567 In Brouage, France Died 1635 In Quebec City

9 By 1604 he sailed to Acadia with Pierre Dugua de Mons who had the vision of settling a French colony there.

10 Twice, in 1605 and 1606, Champlain sailed as far as Cape Cod.

11 John Cabot

12 First voyage: 1496 Sailing westward in the North Atlantic Due to uneven weather patterns his first expedition failed

13 By the time 1497 rolled around Cabot took off sailing on his second expedition

14 Some suggest Cabot saw two islands, and error caused by Newfoundland’s Conception and Trinity Bays arriving at the coast of East Asia

15 The Italian explorer under the rule of Finland travelled to Newfoundland and later Cape Breton.

16 Jacques Cartier

17 Born 1491 In Saint- Malo, France Jacques Cartier made three major North American voyages

18 A year later, King Francis sent Cartier on a second voyage

19 He was sent in hopes of finding settlement along the St Lawrence River on behalf of France

Your job is to represent your groups opinion to the best of your ability. If there is time left over we will have one big group discussion.

24 Group Three Indigenous people today are still fighting for the rights they lost and the treaties that were broken, what is your opinion about the statement “they should just get over it already” because it happened so long ago? Explain
