1 RL03 Analyze and explain how the elements of a narrative or drama interact

2 Story Literary Elements
Some basics that every good story must have ….

3 PLOT “what happens” in a story
A stepdaughter, abused by her step mom and sisters, is granted a wish from her fairy godmother. She attends a party at the prince’s castle, and he asks her dance. He likes her very much and wants to know who she is, but she hurries to leave the party when the clock strikes midnight, and he fails to find out her identity.

4 What is the exposition of a story?
It introduces background information about events, settings, and characters in a story.

5 Every story needs characters
People Animals Or Creatures

6 Characterization How a character’s personality is revealed in a story.

7 What are ways personality is revealed?
Direct: Telling the reader directly what the character is like Indirect 1. What the character says 2. How the character looks and dresses 3. How the character acts What other characters say or think about the character Relationships with others

8 Indirect and Direct characterization in Frozen

9 Character Types Static—a character who does not change much in the course of the story-often, a stereotype. Dynamic—a character who changes as a result of the story’s events. Round—has many different character traits which sometimes contradict one another Flat—one or two traits; often a stereotype

10 What are some examples of static and dynamic characters?

11 The protagonist is the “good guy”

12 The antagonist is the “bad guy” or force

13 The time and place of the story is the setting

14 Rising Action A series of incidents that create suspense, interest, and tension in a narrative

15 Great stories have a conflict—2 forces against each other
Man vs. Man Man vs. Nature Man vs. Society Man vs. Machine Man vs. Himself

16 The climax is the most exciting part!!

17 What is falling action? This occurs right after the climax, wraps up the narrative, and leads to closure.

18 Resolution All conflict is resolved one way or another, and the story is closed.
