1 Learning Point Navigator
Welcome to an introduction to Learning Point Navigator, the online instructional delivery system.

2 Objectives Understand the features and benefits of Learning Point Navigator Learn how to navigate through Learning Point Navigator Be able to instruct teachers how to create and manage assignments and reports for their students Be able to explain to students and their families how they can use Learning Point Navigator The purpose of this module is to help District Assessment Coordinators prepare teachers, as well as students and their families, to use Learning Point Navigator successfully. At the end of this module, you should be able to discuss the benefits and features of Learning Point Navigator, instruct teachers how to access and navigate through Learning Point Navigator so they can create individual student assignments, and help students and their families access and use Learning Point Navigator.

3 Features and Benefits of Learning Point Navigator
Provides teachers with teaching and learning resources that are linked to the Minnesota Academic Standards Allows teachers to give assignments designed to address current classroom content in order to help students gain proficiency in the identified standards Allows students and their families to access teacher-selected learning resources when they are at home so learning can continue outside the classroom District Assessment Coordinators should know the features and benefits of Learning Point Navigator, the online instructional delivery system. First, Learning Point Navigator provides teachers with learning resources that are linked to the Minnesota Academic Standards. The system contains lesson plans, professional development activities, and student activities that can help individual students improve their skills. Second, through Learning Point Navigator, teachers can assign these activities to students based on each student’s individual needs, and then teachers can view their students’ work online to determine whether they have acquired the necessary skills. And third, Learning Point Navigator allows students and their families to work together to complete assignments and enter into discussions about the assignments with other students and their teachers while they are working toward mastery of a skill.

4 Creating Class Rosters before Using Learning Point Navigator
For teachers to use Learning Point Navigator, District Assessment Coordinators must create class rosters. There are two ways to create class rosters: Through TIDE Through the Online Reporting System Detailed steps on creating class rosters in both systems will be available in the user guides for these systems. For teachers to use Learning Point Navigator, District Assessment Coordinators must create class rosters. Teachers can browse through resources without having class rosters, but to give assignments to students, a user must be associated as the teacher to a class roster. There are two ways to create class rosters: Through TIDE Through the Online Reporting System Detailed steps on creating class rosters in both systems will be available in the user guides for these systems.

5 Welcome Page The first way to access Learning Point Navigator is directly through the portal. On the portal homepage, select the Learning Point Navigator icon. This login information will be generated and ed to users as they are added through TIDE. Once at the Login page, users will be asked to enter their username and password to access Learning Point Navigator. This login information will be ed to District Assessment Coordinators from AIR. District Assessment Coordinators will add additional users to TIDE, which generates and s login information for the AIR systems to each new user. Clicking “Submit” will take you to the Homepage of Learning Point Navigator.

7 Getting to Learning Point Navigator from the Online Reporting System
For the MCA 3–8 Math test, teachers can also access Learning Point Navigator through the Online Reporting System. Within the Online Reporting System, users can navigate to a report by standards for a particular group of students. Selecting the “Find Resources” button next to a particular standard will take you directly to a list of resources in Learning Point Navigator that are related to that standard. For the MCA 3–8 Math online adaptive test, teachers can also access Learning Point Navigator through the Online Reporting System. Within the Online Reporting System, users can navigate to a Strengths and Weaknesses report by standards for a particular group of students. Selecting the “Find Resources” button next to a particular standard will take users directly to a list of resources in Learning Point Navigator that are related to that standard. Note that the “Find Resources” button appears only on the Strengths and Weaknesses report. In this example, if you select the “Find Resources” button next to “Algebra: Operations and algebraic properties.” Relative Strengths and Weaknesses

8 Browse Resources: Filtered Search
Users will be taken to this Filtered/Faceted search page in the Browse Resources section of Learning Point Navigator. On the left, you can see that the particular subject, grade, strand and standard filters have been set based on the choice from the Online Reporting System: in this example, a 7th grade Mathematics standard. The general navigation bar across the top includes active assignments, archived assignments, classes, students and resources. Note that Learning Point Navigator is a teaching and learning support, so what you see here is a view of how teachers (and, to some extent, students) will utilize the environment. Chat Room Access

10 Finding Teaching Materials
Selecting “Find Teaching Materials” allows teachers to browse through resources. In November, Math and Reading resources will be available. Science resources will be added in January. These resources can be filtered by grade, content and keyword. This helps teachers select the materials most appropriate for their students. Resource Tools Selecting “Find Teaching Materials” allows teachers to browse the available resources in Learning Point Navigator. In November, teachers will be able to browse Math and Reading resources. Science resources will be added in January 2012. On the left side of the Browse Resources page, you will see the search options. Using these options, you can filter the list of resources by grade, content and keyword search. This helps teachers select the materials most appropriate for their students’ needs. Within the listing for any individual resource, there is a “Preview” button that will allow you to walk through the particular resource. We will do this when we view an assignment later in this module. The “Related Materials” button will help you assign additional resources based on how well a student or group of students has performed on the particular resource. If a student or group of students has performed well on a particular resource, indicating a strong understanding of the topic, the “Related Materials” button will help you find resources to push the students. Likewise, if a student or group of students struggled with a particular resource, the “Related Materials” button will help you find resources and create assignments that may help fill any gaps the students may have. This is a key feature of Learning Point Navigator – helping teachers quickly find and assign appropriate resources based on student strengths and weaknesses. The “Favorites” button enables you to select a resource you like and are planning to use. If you click the “Favorites” button, it will change color, and the resource will be included on the Favorites page. Search Options

11 Assigning Materials to Students
Once an appropriate resource is selected, a teacher can choose to assign that resource to students. An assignment may be given to an individual student or group of students, the entire class roster or multiple class rosters. Individual Students Once an appropriate resource is selected, a teacher can choose to assign that resource to students. There is flexibility in choosing who will receive the assignment. An assignment may be given to an individual student or group of students, the entire class roster or multiple class rosters. This creates the opportunity for increased differentiation in instruction. 12 Sample Assignment: Opening View
Once a resource has been selected for assignment, the teacher can create a message about what the students are supposed to do and which portion of the assignment the teacher would like them to complete. Teacher-created Message Resource Once a resource has been selected for assignment, the teacher can create a message about what the students are supposed to do and which portion of the assignment the teacher would like them to complete. On the left, you can see the title of the resource included in the assignment. On the right, you can see the teacher’s message to the students.

13 Student Self-Assessment Questions with Feedback
The guided practice section of the assignment gives the student self-assessment questions and provides him or her with immediate feedback. Now let’s look at the assignment from the student’s point of view. 15 Active Assignments Page
The Active Assignments page includes the date when an assignment opens for the students, the due date (when the assignment closes for the students), the assignment title, who it has been assigned to, the subject and an “Edit” button. Assignment Features Returning to the teacher’s perspective, The Active Assignments page includes the start date (when an assignment opens for the students), the due date (when the assignment closes for the students), the assignment title, to whom it has been assigned (to), the subject and an “Edit” button. In addition, the subject status bar, which includes information on the percentage of students who have completed the assignment (not how well they have done), is provided. In the completed assignments section, in addition to the due date, assignment title, to whom it has been assigned and the subject, you will see an “Archive” button and a “Report” button. The “Report” button allows you to see a breakdown by student or benchmark.

16 Report: By Student Teachers can see the students’ individual results on a particular assignment. Here the report for the “Comparing to Tenths” assignment has been selected. Teachers can see the students’ individual results on a particular assignment. Here the report for the “Comparing to Tenths” assignment has been selected. The low score, the high score, and the average score for the five students who have completed the assignment are given. The modify display lets you choose how to score assignments that have unanswered questions. You can choose to exclude the unanswered questions or to include them but not score them, or you can choose to include them but give them a score of 0. If there are assignments that have unanswered questions, the Percent Correct will change accordingly when “Include, but give a zero for unanswered questions” has been chosen.

17 Report: By Benchmark Teachers can also view an assignment report by the benchmarks it assesses. Teachers can also view an assignment report by the benchmarks it assesses.

18 My Classes Page The My Classes page provides a list of all the classes and rosters created that are associated with the User.

19 View Class Report By selecting a particular roster, a teacher can see the average score, the low score and the high score for the students included in the roster for the three given assignments. By selecting a particular roster, a teacher can see the average score, the low score, and the high score for the students included in the roster for the given assignments, in this case, three.

20 Student Assignments Teachers can elect to see the assignment results for a particular student listed in a roster. This page shows how the student did on each of the assignments. Investigate Teachers can elect to see the assignment results for a particular student listed in a roster as well. This page shows how the student did on each of the assignments. In the example, the student has earned 100% on “Comparing to Hundredths” but only 75% on “Comparing to Tenths.” You might find this strange and want to investigate further to find out why the student had difficulty with the “Comparing to Tenths” assignment but not the “Comparing to Hundredths” assignment.

21 Student Assignments: Quiz Results
If you view the quiz for the “Comparing to Tenths” assignment, you will see that the questions the student answered incorrectly are highlighted in pink. Examining these more closely might help teachers make additional instructional decisions. 22 Learning Point Navigator
Virtual Classrooms Another feature of Learning Point Navigator is the virtual classroom. The following slides contain information about using the Class Chat rooms and the Discussion Board features of the virtual classroom.

23 Class/Student Settings
Teachers can decide to enable the Chat feature and the Discussion Board feature. Teachers can decide to turn on the Chat and Discussion Board features for a particular class or roster. The teacher also decides when to turn off the Chat and the Discussion Board features. Virtual Classroom settings can be enabled if the teacher decides to use these. Teachers can decide whether to turn on the Chat feature or the Discussion Board feature, and whether the Discussion Board is moderated or not moderated.

24 Class Chat Rooms Class Chat access appears in the lower left corner of the Learning Point Navigator Homepage. Selecting this option will bring up a list of the classes with which the teacher is associated. Selecting an individual student name allows the teacher to have a separate chat with that student. Class Chat Access to Transcripts The purpose of the Class Chat is to allow students in a class and their teacher to carry on an online conversation. A teacher can access Class Chat by selecting the Class Chat option at the lower left corner of the Learning Point Navigator Homepage. Selecting this option will bring up a list of the classes with which the teacher is associated. The teacher can select a class to chat with or he or she can select an individual student in order to chat privately with that student. Note that teachers have the ability to monitor everything that happens during the Class Chat and can block individual students from participating in the Class Chat. It is also important for teachers to know that the Class Chat feature allows private conversations between students and teachers. However, students cannot chat privately during a Class Chat with other students. Teachers can also view transcripts of chats that take place within the Class Chat feature. The transcript link offers teachers the choice of viewing two types of transcripts: The one at the top accesses the transcript for the entire class, while the ones listed next to the students’ names are for chats the teacher might have had with individual students. 25 Virtual Classrooms: Discussion Topic
Another feature of Virtual Classrooms is the Discussion Board. Note that there are options to add an audio or video file in addition to text. The file types that are supported are listed on the right side of the screen. The purpose of the Discussion Board is to provide a more formal online conversation among students and their teacher. The Discussion Board allows teachers to post specific topics for discussion. If the Discussion Board option has been set to be moderated, the teacher must approve all topics and comments before they are posted to the discussion. The Discussion Board also allows teachers and students to post comments on topics started by students in the Discussion Board. As with the Class Chat feature, teachers can monitor everything that happens during the discussion and can block individual students from participating in the Discussion Board. Teachers also have the ability to delete any post or topic in the Discussion Board if necessary. Note that both teachers and students can use the Discussion Board feature to add an audio or video file in addition to text. The file types that are supported are listed on the lower-right side of the screen. Upload a file

26 Learning Point Navigator
Student and Family Access As a District Assessment Coordinator, you may receive many questions from students and their families about how to use Learning Point Navigator effectively. In this section, we will discuss how students and their families can access Learning Point to work on an assignment and how families can monitor their student’s skill mastery. We will also discuss how both students and families can get help while working through an assignment.

27 Student Login Page Students log in using first name, MARSS Number and date of birth. This information will need to be readily available to students so they can easily access Learning Point Navigator at home or in the classroom. Note that parents and students can access Learning Point Navigator as long as class rosters have been created and teachers have given an assignment to the students. Parents and students can access Learning Point Navigator and search for relevant resources on their own.  To reiterate, it is important to note that for a student to log in to Learning Point Navigator the following are required: The student must have his or her MARSS Number to log in to the system. The student must appear on a class roster. To access relevant resources, the student’s teacher must have created an assignment for the student in Learning Point Navigator. A student can log in to Learning Point Navigator once they are in the system with their name, MARSS #, and DOB. However, they won’t be able to access anything until they have an active assignment.

28 Student Homepage Once a student logs in, he or she will be taken to the My Assignments page. This page displays the student’s active assignments along with any chats or discussions that are taking place. To begin an assignment, the student clicks the “Start” button. 29 In Progress Assignment
If a student has started an assignment, the status bar shows the student’s progress toward completion. If a student has started an assignment, the status bar shows the student’s progress toward completion. Clicking the “Continue” button next to any ongoing assignment will enable the student to go back to where he or she stopped working, reread the instructions, review the guided practice and continue toward completing the assignment. Continue Assignment

30 “Need Help?” Button While students are working on an assignment, they can click the “Need Help?” button. This will bring up related resources that may help students fill some of the gaps. While students are working on an assignment, they can click the “Need Help?” button. This will bring up related resources that may help students fill in some of the gaps. Students can assign these resources to themselves. This is a key feature of Learning Point Navigator: It gives students the opportunity to self-assess and self-assign resources, thereby helping them take some control of their own learning.
