2 Welcome to Physical Science
What is Physical Science? One of the natural sciences that studies NON-LIVING things Consists of 2 main branches Physics and Chemistry Physics = study of matter and its motion through space and time, along with related concepts such as energy and force. We study physics to understand how the universe behaves. Chemistry = what matter is made up of, its properties like boiling and melting points, and how different kinds of matter interact with each other

5 The Nature of Science What is the nature of Science? What is it? What kind of things happen in Science? THINK & SHARE Science comes from the Greek word Scientia meaning knowledge. Science is the pursuit of knowledge in order to understand the natural world. To do this… Scientists ask “HOW” and “WHY”? Do experiments, collect data, analyze that data, draw conclusions and create models in order to communicate findings. You might say that Scientists are SEEKERS OF TRUTH!

6 Nature of Science Activity
Work in groups of 2 1 envelope per 2 students Sheet paper to cover completed puzzle Activity Objective: Inside your envelope are 4 puzzle pieces that represent a scientific mystery. Together with your partner solve the scientific mystery by solving the puzzle.

8 CAN WE CLAIM ABSOLUTE TRUTH in SCIENCE?
No! New Discoveries mean that scientific theories and laws can change.

9 The Extra Piece = New Discovery
Your teacher is going to give you another puzzle piece. It represents a new scientific discovery. Your task is to add the puzzle piece to the other pieces and once again solve the mystery. Once you find the answer, cover it up with a sheet of paper, then you may give hints to others at your quad that might need help.
