4 Maslow’s Hierarchy of Human Needs
Maslow believed that people’s behavior is motivated by the desire to meet a series of basic human needs. The needs must be met in order, beginning with the needs of the body, to social needs, to needs of the human spirit. If a person does not successfully meet the needs on a particular level, it will cause maladaptive or antisocial behavior (pathology). 4ithG_07Q

5 Using Maslow to Analyze a Character
You can use Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs to analyze a character’s motivation or actions within a story. The following list on the handout provided can be used to see how a person might behave if those needs are met, and if those needs are not met. When you analyze your character using Maslow, analyze the person at each level, and provide evidence from the text, or an educated inference using clues the author provides and your own thinking, as to whether or not the character has satisfied that level of need or not. More on this later…

6 What is a Refugee? a person who has been forced to leave their country in order to escape war, persecution, or natural disaster. “Wizards of Perfil” connection: the main characters in the short story we are about to ready are refugees. Watch the video, and think about how this relates to the previous conversations/free-write about stress.
