I. Purpose – to maintain peace between member nations, encourage cooperation and replace the League of Nations A. April 25, 1945 – 50 nations meet in San Francisco to draft UN Charter B. Headquartered in NYC

4 C. Two main bodies of UN are the Security Council and General
Assembly (which now has 150 members) 1. Security Council – investigates diplomatic, political and military disputes; peacekeeping and emergencies; had 11 (now 15) members. Five permanent members are Great Britain, China, France, US, and Russia – they all had to agree on decisions. 2. General Assembly – policy making arm of UN has reps from all nations. Security Council at work

5 III. UN had trouble deciding what to do about Europe after
the wars. They had different goals: A. US and Great Britain wanted to build democracies all over the world. They wanted to help Western Germany get back on its feet. B. Soviet Union wanted to draw a line along Eastern Europe to keep themselves safe- a buffer zone. This would give Stalin (Russia) control of 100 million more people as Communists.

6 Successes of the UN: Wrote the Universal Declaration of Human Rights – preserved basic freedoms for individuals, creates a common standard for all people. B. Set up UNESCO, WHO, FAO and UNICEF to help battle hunger, disease and fight for literacy for all people.
