1 Warm-up 10/08/12 Write and answer the questions below: 1.) Who are the two sides in The Sniper? 2.) How does The Sniper get spotted by the enemy? 3.) What plan does he make up to escape? 4.) What does he find out in the end?

2 Definition, Examples Topic vs. Theme

3 Topic The subject being talked about in a story; it’s a SINGLE WORD.
Ex: love, friendship, hardship. Topics in The Sniper:

4 (I Say): In a full sentence, what is a topic of this story?
Choose a TOPIC from the story: How is this TOPIC shown in the story? (It Says): Find a piece of text from the story that supports this topic . (I Say): In a full sentence, what is a topic of this story?

5 Theme A message about the topic written in a SENTENCE.
A statement about life. Example: Topic = Writing Theme = Writing is powerful. Topic = Love Theme = Love brings happiness.

6 This is a THEME of the story.
What did the character learn about this TOPIC in the story? WHEN/HOW does the character learn these things? Make this THEME into a statement about life: This is a THEME of the story.

7 Storyboard Activity Fold your paper into six parts and create a comic strip that shows the six most important parts of the story. Draw the illustrations and then include quotes for each part of the story. Be sure you have six boxes and that your drawings of each are in order and that they show the six parts of the story. The requirements are as follows: Must have six boxes that show the main parts of the story. Illustrations must be nicely drawn. Must have one quote/sentence from text for each box.

8 Storyboard and Rap Pick a partner and create a rap about the THEME of this play. Must be 20 lines. Write a rough draft first. Write the poem nicely on the sheet of paper. Use some of the words in the text. Decorate the paper with designs and illustrations that symbolize the main idea of the poem. Be sure everything relates to the story and the theme. OPTIONAL: If you are lost, use the words in the story and rearrange them (it doesn’t have to rhyme!).
