4 Gothic Short Story Project!
Common Traits of Gothic Romantic Stories: Explores the Darker Side of Human Nature Melodrama and Sensationalism Emphasis on Emotions and Imagination over Logic/Reason/Science Supernatural The Sublime (Extreme Terror) The Fallen Hero (Loss of Innocence) Mystery and Suspense Isolation of the Individual (Physical and Emotional) Setting/Nature as a Character Fatalism For this assignment, your job is to pretend you’re a writer from the Gothic Romantic movement. For the next four class periods, you will write a short story that shows at least six of the ten common elements of Gothic Literature. I would like for these to be typed, double spaced, and in 12 pt. font. Your stories should be at least 1000 words in length. Once you create your google doc, make sure you share it with my

5 Gothic Story: Part Two In addition to your short story, you also need a paragraph (or just bullet points) identifying the six Gothic elements you included with a brief explanation of where to find that element in your story. For example: “My story includes mystery and suspense because the narrator is a police investigator trying to find a missing woman.”

6 Gothic Story: Timeline
You will have four full class periods to complete this: today, tomorrow, Monday the 20th, and Tuesday the 21st. They will be due at the end of the day on Tuesday, November 21st. Good luck!  Note: Randomly throughout each period, I will be checking to ensure that you have made steady progress on your stories. These progress checks will be worth 20 points, or 25% of your grade.

7 Gothic Story: Daily Goals
Check out the Grading Scale on the back of your handout. Make sure you read through it before you begin – that’s what I’ll be using to grade your projects  Begin drafting an outline of your story. Get an idea of what will happen in the beginning, middle, and end of your story. Ensure that your story outline still includes your six Gothic elements Look through the ten common elements of Gothic literature on the front of your handout. You may also look through your Gothic Lit notes if you need some more explanation for each one. Decide which six elements you might like to use. If you finish with the first three goals, you may begin writing! Consider: How can I open my story in an attention- getting way? If you’re stuck, start in the middle of the action!
